All You H'Burg Folks

I have been given a promotion with the company I work for and will be transferring to H'burg in a few weeks. What is the housing situation around there? I would like to rent for 6 mos to a year to get the lay of the land before I buy a home. I was even thinking about some of the smaller towns outside H'Burg, that were around 20-30 miles from work. Like Collins, Seminary, Sumrall, Prentiss. What do yall know about those areas? Sue 273/261/140/135

Hey Sue, congrats on the promotion. I work in Hattiesburg, but I live in Petal. We love Petal. There are some really nice people there and some great neighborhoods and really active churches. Petal is really growing fast and has become a hot spot to live in where you are not right in the middle of Hattiesburg but not so far out you can't enjoy all the fun stuff in town. We started off in an apartment in Oak Grove until we could decide where we wanted to live. We finally decided on Petal mainly because of the schools there since we have children. Plus, we had found a church there too. I work with several people who live in Sumrall and drive into Hattiesburg to work. They like Sumrall. They complain about the drive here lately due to gas prices. Email me and I will give you my phone numbers so you can call when you are in town. We can go to lunch. Melissa

I have no words of wisdom about Hattiesburg because I have no idea where anything is in Mississippi! I am still pretty new to the area! I know I live an hour or so from there...I am living in Meridian, MS but I am from Louisiana...Anyway, I just wanted to say WOO HOO on the promotion! That is so great!!!!!!!! Hugs, Danielle

Hi Sue, I'm in Hattiesburg/Oak Grove area. There are several apartments located in our area, some smaller complexes and some large. It depends on what amenities you may want, traffic patterns to work, etc. I would stay away from the college area if you don't like noise. If you like a complex with a pool, I would recommend the apts on Oak Grove Road at the corner of Lincoln Road Extension. I can't remember the name but you can't miss them. Friends of mine lived there while they were searching for a house. It was a family friendly, professional atmosphere with few college aged residents. It is gated for security and close to everything. The housing market is tight now with all the hurricane growth and Hwy 98/Hardy Street can be a traffic nightmare but I love Hattiesburg. If you plan to buy a house eventually, the apt route is advisable so you have time to decide which area of town you like the best. My inlaws live in Collins and I have friends in Sumrall. They are both very nice to buy a house but apts will be very slim pickings. Where will you be working? It will make a difference in where you want to live. Congratulations, Elesha
