Did I mess up?

Hello everyone, If you've read my posts, you know I have struggled with this liquid diet. Well, I finally just went nuts this week. Monday, I ate the insides of some pumpkin seeds (chewed very good) and got pinto beans from Taco Bell and ate a little. Tuesday, I ate 1/3 of a McDonald's little hamburger (bottom bun only). I ate some peanut butter with a tiny bit of mayo on it (made me sick). I haven't been getting protein shakes (I'm just so sick of everything liquid), but I finally ordered a sampler off the internet, which is supposed to be in tomorrow. I haven't had a BM since I ate this junk, that I can remember. I have to go back to the doc tomorrow, and I'm scared. I want to be honest with him, but I don't want to get fussed at. I mean, I know I screwed up. I admit it!! It's all my fault!! My biggest concern is that I'm stopped up. I haven't had anything come back up, though, so maybe I'm just constipated. I don't know. Sorry to be so graphic. I'm just freaking out. I love you guys! Deborah

Hey hun, you MUST be from Dr. King (I was too). The liquid diet is hard, I did stick to it because I had not read a lot from this board or from other people who had other surgeons, and I was VERY scared not to. Maybe just tell him that you had stuff you were not supposed to, but don't go into detail - LOL....Seriously, he will fuss some but OH WELL. So, my advice to you is - if you are going to cheat on the liquid diet, at least do it with softer foods, mind you, I'm not tell you to cheat, just be very careful if you're going to do it anyway- mashed potatoes - soft soft foods , I loved the hot and sour soup from the Chinese place back then, still do sometimes. It had a lot of flavor. And the bathroom thing, I never had a problem with if I happened to eat something with a little sugar or something I was not supposed to have. DRINK LOTS OF WATER - sip sip sip. Have a wonderful day and re-laaaaxxxx.

Hey Deborah, I was not on a liquid diet as long as you have been. My doctor released me to soft foods after 10 days. Tell your doctor when you go that you are that food. He might go ahead and release you to soft foods or explain to you why he has you on liquids for so long. Its very hard to be on liquids and I was only on them for 10 days. Around day 6 I ate a peice of sausage. It didnt hurt me to my knowledge but I know it could have really messed up my stoma since it was not healed. You ate soft foods so I would venture that you are okay but I would talk to the doc when you go.

I was not on liquids as long as you so I feel for you. After two weeks I was put on thicker stuff or pureed which gave me a few more choices. So, if you find you just can't do liquids just puree some stuff in the food processor or blender and just make sure it is really soft. Staying on liquid or soft or pureed stuff is really important at this point as you are healing internally. I did refried beans and added some water and some cheese so they were not so thick. I also took Campbell's soups and put that in the food processor and pureed it. I made homemade soups and pureed it in the food processor. Do some things like that to add some more flavorful stuff to your diet. I think you are okay and haven't hurt anything. As far as the constipation goes that is normal too. My doc explained it to me like this. You are not eating very much food so you are not going to have to go as often. Once or twice a week at first is considered okay early out from surgery. But if when you do go it is hard then you are not taking in enough liquid. Liquids help move the bowels especially water. So, I think you are probably okay there too. But if you are worried just call your surgeon's office and let them reassure you. Good luck. Sounds like you are doing fine. Melissa

Hey Deborah Oxford person here! King is Very conservative with advancing diet But he has a great success rate with his patients. Tell him everything and be "Up Front" with him. That way he can help you with what you're really facing Rather than what he "thinks" you're going through. Yes? Don't freak out. This isn't a "this week only" sort of diet. It's a full out "Lifestyle Change" And you get to keep working at it for Life! He'll probably recommend other food choices and Recommend something for the Constipation. Sorry to have missed the support group meeting last week. I was up in Boston. I hope to make the one next month. Best Wishes- Dx

Thanks Dex, my advice with Dr. King was kind of tongue in cheek as I tend to be that way sometimes. I tend to forget there are times to be completely serious. You are so focused and a wonderful example. I showed your pics to my daughter a few minutes ago! You are awesome. I always like seeing ya on the board!

I know how you feel. I had complications so was on the liquid diet a long longer than most. When I finally got out of the hospital, I cooked fresh potato until it was mushy, then added a tiny bit of milk and salt to make a runny soup. I tried the pinto beans at Taco Bell and almost lost it, I was sooo sick! I could not stand Mayo or oily things after surgery so I had to look for other things. I found that fruit popcycles were good, egg drop soup from the chinese restaurant goes down well. Egg custard, salty (My husband makes the best!) I also ate crackers, chewed very well, and I blended my protein drinks in a smoothie blender, like a milk shake. I found that some flavors were too much at first, like banana.... almost lost it on that so mostly I stuck to vanilla. Curiously, watermelon goes down like a dream for me, even early on, I could tolerate it and did not dump! Plain boiled shrimp were good too, and raw salmon (sha-shimi) went down great! Hard to believe!!! Now Shushi did not, because of the rice! Also, very thin spaghetti sauce, with no chunks of ground meat and not greasy, on a few strands of spaghetti, Lean ground beef in white sauce was good too, and the inside of a Banquet Chicken pot pie, disgard the chunks of chicken. I could not eat baked fish, too dense, chicken the same, although if you pressure cooked chicken or por****il it is falling apart, it is easier to eat. Could not eat anything at Mc Donald, ate 1/4 of a fish sandwich, such a tummy ache!!!! Sonic has nothing either for gastric patients. Soft stuff is the best way to go. You can mash up butter beans, or blackeyed peas, or soft cook english peas. No rough salad, celery, apples, pears etc. Strawberries are great with Splenda! Hope that this helps you..... I was at a loss for foods that tasted good after surgery. It took a long time to find stuff that was good and ok to eat. I still have to make careful choices too! Dont worry about going to BM, eventually, you will go and sometimes it will come very fast and you may not make it!!! LOL!!! My stomach was not very predictable and I learned when it kind of gurgled and turned over a bit to start looking for the bathroom!!!!! Check for sugar in EVERYTHING!!!!!! It is in a lot of stuff, the lower the carbs the better for you. Sugar can make you very ill, a little bit and I get a massive stomache!!!!!! Hang in there and rest a lot, when your stomach feels upset, go to bed and try to rest, it is the best for recovery if you can do this!!! Cheryl

The beans were prolly okay. Yep confess to Dr. K. A little early for the h'burger, tho. Pour on the water and that will help unconstipate you - or should.....Peanut butter and mayo??????? YOu must be kin to Jim!!!! Don't worry. You will be very sick before you harm yourself too much!!! Trust me! I got confused about how long it'd been since I had surgery during the first month and started on solids WAY too soon, realized it, and backed off. Doesn't seem to be any permanent harm done. Hang in there! Be honest and do the very best you can! Smoochies Arlies PS I am at almost 10 months out and can just now eat a dab on mayo on a sandwich without getting sick.

Hey sweetie!! I am no expert but I suggest you do as the doc says. Get back on protein . I suggest that you wait awile about some of the foods you are eating. Cook your own red beans, pinto beans and etc. fast food contains grease or lard. Cook them to a mash and then put them in the blendaer or just mash up. a good protein source. Get your water in. huggs-------glenda

Hi Debora, As everyone else has said, not you did nor mess up, but you do have to be careful. It can be a real challenge to re-balance your diet. As yes, tell the DR. In some ways, you married that Dr. when you had the surgery - you have a committment to follow his game plan, but that doen't mean that the game plan cannot be dicsussed and changed as you go. The eating thing is as much trial and error as it is anything else, just remember the nutritional priorities (Protein and water and daily supplements). Keep up the good work, james.
