USA Today Article
In yesterdays USA Today there was an article about the risks of wls surgery being greater than they had thought. What is funny is the statistics that they gave. Of patients age 65 to 74 their risk of dying from wls surgery increased to 13% in men and 6% in women. How many men and women do you know in that age group that are over 100 lbs. overweight? Not very many I can assure you! As a geriatric nurse it was very rare to see someone in that age group because they have usually already died from complications of being overweight, and if you did they were in a wheelchair or bedridden. The statistics of dying from heart disease is far greater than these odds. I think that this is probably another scare tactic of the insurance companies to decrease the amount of surgeries that they would have to pay for. I have lost 84 lbs so far from wls and feel better than I have in many years. We each have to decide how we want to live.
