I was wondering if anyone here had Dr Byars for surgery? My main question is: What do I need to have on hand when I come home from the hospital? Different docs have different protocols/diets. So what should I go to the store and have ready for when I get home? Thanks for the help!! You are all so great!! Judy

Hi Judy. I did not use Dr. Byars but almost all docs send their patients home on liquid diets. This consists of some soups, broth, SF jello, SF popsicles, protein drinks, etc... Stuff like that. Some even consider cottage cheese okay to eat during that stage. I have heard alot of people say their tastes changes after surgery. So I didnt get alot of shakes and stuff before hand. I did have a few slim fasts and carnation instant breakfasts, and broth. After 3 months I finally found shakes that I liked. But we all have different tastes. Make sure you have a variety of things because the liquid diet is the hardest part. Its mostly cold stuff and sometimes we just want some warm stuff and we want to chew. I did anyway. I didnt feel like I was eating unless I chewed and chewing liquid is kinda hard. May I suggest Designer Whey protein shakes? They come in several different fruity flavors and are almost like smoothies. I got them at Walmart... They were about 100 cals and 15-20 grams or protein and they tasted good. Good Luck to you!

Hi Judy, Just wanted to say hello. Dr. King is my doctor. I don't have a date yet, but hope to have surgery in late Sept. Can't have it before then - got to get my daughter settled in school and wait for my dad to recover from his eye surgery on 8/16. I am having my EGD Tuesday, along with a vena cava filter put in. I've had a stomach virus since Wednesday. You don't think that will affect anything do you? I'm better now, but my stomach is still tender. Gotta go. Deborah

Hey Judy, I used Dr King and him and Dr Byars use the same protocal. When you come home you can have liquids, I loved the sf popsicles. You can have like chicken broth, or liquid off of other soups, crystal light,of course water. But you want start your protein shakes until a little later. Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Becky

I had Dr. Byars. You have made an excellent choice. He is such a wonderful doctor. I came home and needed broths, popsicles, juice to dissolve my meds in. He doesn't put you on the shakes until, I believe, two weeks out, maybe longer. Best of luck to you. Kitsy

Hi, Judy. You've made a great choice in the group at Oxford. Dr King did my surgery and I have had 0 problems. Just follow the plan and you should do fine. Phillip 322/238/175
