what did ya'll eat today 7/28/05?
Hey Tams
The main reason I asked others on the board, is because I was cautioned to not donate because we are already taking iron on a daily basis to stay healthy. I recognize this as a cautionary statement, and so far I didnt donate because of the requirements a year ago, I remember them asking " have you had major surgery in the last 12 months" and at that time, I was like two months preop and donated. Later I found out I shouldn't have because I'll need all the blood I can get for my own surgery and that if something had happened and I needed blood during my own surgery, I would have been less likely to need it had I not donated. My surgery went fine, I didnt need any blood, thank goodness.
So it's a toss up, I think donating is for a very good cause and I was interested in what other surgeons have to say. I don't plan on doing this every 8 weeks, but I'm thinking once or twice a year should not be dangerous. I'll again check with my surgeon's office to see what I can do to give me a safer guideline to donating. The red cross people didn't see anything wrong with me having surgery and donating and I've seen several folks on the main board posting about it as well, so I'm a bit torn here. Oh well, sorry I gave you a headache
My apologies
~Andie~

I was told not to give blood because WLS patients malaborb iron forever. And when a normal person gives blood it takes them 1 week to rebuild their iron levels, but it takes a WLS patient 3 weeks or even longer. So if a WLS patient consistantly gave blood they could deplete their iron levels. Once in a while like once per year probably wouldn't hurt or in an emergency situation it would be okay I was told. But some WLS patients have a harder time than others with iron levels so it is best not to chance not being able to rebuild the iron levels after a blood donation.
Hope that got rid of your headache from too much thinking LOL.
See ya later, girl.
Melissa
