Barry,
I love going to Washington. If you have never been and can stand the sadness I would suggest visiting the Holocaust Museum and going thru the Daniels Story exhibit. It is really sad but opens your eyes to what it was like during the holocaust for jews. It is extremely sad but something everyone should see once. Be careful what you take in your pocket. My husband had to throw his little bitty pocket knife in the bushes before we could go in. They dont play anymore. We also enjoy the Money Making place.. I cant remember what it is called but I loved seeing all that money stacked and being printed. We had hoped they would give us samples but they wouldnt. One of my other favorite places to visit in DC is Arlington Cemetary. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the changing of the guards is something that brings tears to my eyes. I also enjoyed seeing JFKs eternal flame. Its amazing. I would live in DC if I werent so afraid of it. Of course you cant miss the Washington Monument. You could see the pentagon from there in the distance. My daughter loved the monument more than anything else. We stay in Harpers Ferry and take the Marc Train into Union Station. It amazes me how things work up there. All those people commute. The train stops and they all get on and finish getting dressed on the train while on the way to DC. Union station scared me half to death. Lots of homeless people always asking for money and sleeping in the station with their blankets and stuff. It just scared me as I am not used to seeing it here.
I am jealous of yall. Your going to have so much fun. Are you all flying? When we went this past March we flew into Baltimore and rented a car. We had the best time. Usually we fly into Reagan but Baltimore was cheaper and a non stop flight. If you are just going to be site seeing the whole time ride to Harpers Ferry. Its a wonderful place to visit. Its very beautiful. Its my favorite place in the whole world. St. Peters Church is in Harpers Ferry and it was where my parents were married and I was baptized. You can visit John Browns tomb and see where the Shenandoah and Potomic river meet and it is just beautiful. This is making me home sick...
Gotta plan my next trip...
Hi Barry
Well, have lots of fun up there, and make sure you write all the stuff down Christine wrote about. I was there many years ago before I ever had kids, and I remember one thing as most important : DO NOT take your car into DC, you won't find any parking spots !!! Ride the subway !!
My oldest daughter is going to DC in a few weeks, she'll be seeing the white house and other good stuff herself, getting to do things with the governor's office etc, she is really into the whole politics thing and she's totally excited.
Get your best pair of tennis shoes ready.. you'll do plenty of walking. I wish I could go myself but just can't get time off work.
HAVE FUN!!!
