UPDATE ON ME!
Hi, everyone! I just thought I would give a quick update on how I'm doing. I got out of the hospital last Friday after spending 13 more days. I got re-admitted due to pneumonia and fluid around my spleen due to a leak in my stomach. The day after I was admitted, they put a J.P. drain in my left side to get rid of the fluid build up and they put a p.i.c. line in for i.v fluids and parental nutrition. I was NPO for 7 days while they waited for my stomach to try to heal itself. You can't even imagine how hard it was not to be able to drink anything or even have ice chips for 7 days! Anyway, after the 7th day, they did another leak test on me and it turned out okay, so finally I got some water. The i.v. nutrition they had me on was 1500 calories, so I didn't really lose any weight while in the hospital. They were giving me 3 bags of flagyl a day and 1 bag of cipro. (I shouldn't get an infection for the next 6 months at least). A doctor came in a few days before I was discharged to drain the fluid off my lungs. Even with a morphine pump, I could still feel the needle going into my back. Throughout my stay, I can't even tell you how many cat-scans and chest x-rays I had done. I'm scared to see my upcoming hospital bill. When I left the hospital, I had to go home with the drain still in, just to be sure it wasn't going to drain anymore. I went back this past Wednesday to get it taken out, and I can't begin to describe how much pain I was in when the dr. snatched it out. Thank god for Adam being there to hold me up, or I would have fainted for sure. If I ever have to have another one, they will put me to sleep before they yank it out. Worst pain I've ever felt!
Anyway, I feel so much better with the drain out. I still feel very weak. I have to go back next Wednesday for another chest x-ray and cat-scan so they can be sure everything is looking okay. I've only lost around 30 lbs so far, but I know it will be coming off quicker now that I'm not laid up in the hospital. When I came out of the hospital, I had to go back to stage 1, clear liquids. I'll just be so glad when I can eat pasta.
Thanks for everyone keeping me in their prayers. I've had a rough month, but I know it'll get better. God bless!
Jackie
Hi jackie, I have been wondering how you were doing, I am glad you are better. 30 lbs is great! I am out 7 wks and I still don't tolerate pasta, I've lost about 35, and stuck there it seems. Talk about that drain tube!!!! That really hurt more than waking up after surgery! I actually cried! I hope you get better and better soon. Brenda
OH Jackie...you poor dear! I'm sorry that you've had such a horrible time. Hopefully that's behind you now, and things will go much more smooth. I'm always reminded how dangerous this surgery is and it should never be taken lightly....of course, it's nice to hear the good and the bad for those conisdering it.
*hugs* let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Dear Jackie,
I believe that you had a worse experience than mine! I know that you must feel very weak and just need to take it easy and heal... Go to bed when you don't feel well and take it very easy! Do not lift anything at all either! I know that you will be feeling much better soon. I could not go pasta when I was post op, still hard to eat it as it is too filling. Mashed potato went down better for me, also chicken and beef bullion cubes were good, canned soups were too creamy!
The drain is really something, mine felt like a cork coming out, I was very worried, but it sealed itself ok, but the scar still hurts at times, and I am almost a year out. Be patient about losing weight, it will come naturally, you just need to be as healthy as possible! Hang in there!
Love,
Cheryl
