Anyone know of any other Dr that accepts VR?
I have to find a doctor that will accept Vocational Rehab. This seems to be getting hopeless... Here is what I know so far:
Dr. Salameh - not accepting new patients right now (backlog of patients)
Dr. King - no longer accepts VR
Dr. Bayer - accepts VR but there is a two year waiting list right now
Dr. Caroll - chooses which patients he accepts for VR (lady in charge
of this has not returned my call). He also only does the
banding and I prefer the RNY (Lap).
Dr. Cleveland - does not accept VR
SMSWLC Clinic - does not accept VR
If I had the money I would just pay for this myself, but I can not afford to do that. I have to find a dr that will work with Vocational Rehab. Any ideas?

I am going through Dr Byars in Oxford. I was just put on the list in March and am having surgery in August. I know they only accept 2/month but sometimes people cancel etc. I was told there was over a year waiting list but didn't take that long. I went for my last md visit before surgery today. My surgery was scheduled for Aug 8th. Not too bad of a wait. If I were you I would get on the list asap while you research other options. I waited to be put on the list while I was looking for other options/docs/etc and wish now I hadn't. I probably would have had my surgery done and over with by now. Anyway,,I know how you feel. I have been trying to have this for over 3 years now and finally found out about the Dept of Rehab back in November. Good luck! Prayers are with you. Anytime I can be of help,,just write.

Judy - thanks for the info on Dr. Byars. I told the lady to go ahead and put me on the waiting list, I will call tomorrow to be sure she did. Wonder when they would want me to set up a office visit with Dr. Byars if that is the case? When did you go for the first time?
Thanks for all your help!

Mary - I looked on ObesityHelp.com surgeon search and the only surgeries listed for Dr. Carroll are Open VBG and Lap Band. All of the patients listed seem to have only had banding surgeries. I mentioned this to my counselor at Voc. Rehab and he said that he had also heard Dr. Carroll only did the banding surgeries. I will try to call his office again since the lady never returned my message. If you hear any different, please let me know.
Thanks!

Well, I went to Dr. Carroll to see about getting a band re-do (I had the nonadjustable band and have to have it reversed a few years ago). He was, at the time, the only WLS person here. (I had mine done in TX self-pay origionally and will be self-pay for whatever revision I can manage). He does more than just the lap band. I am a nurse and have taken care of some of his patients who have had the RNY as well as the VBG and also the band. He's very versatile.
Advice, though, if/when you talk to him...if your research is mostly internet-based He'll be quick to tell you that all you read isn't true. (I mentioned this site and he wasn't impressed that i "believed what I read" he was also quick to say that things aren't always as good as they are made out to be, etc.). I wasn't sure how to take that other than---if you have questions/concerns don't take anyone's advice about it...ASK him. haha. sounds trite, I know, but I felt about 1 inch tall when he said all that to me.
And I know that some of his patients in the past have been Voc Rehab--but that isn't to say that it changes from day to day. He isn't just a WLS surgeon--he has a large practice and recently his office re-configured (some of the physicians split and i'm not sure why). He is a general surgeon/trauma specialist type guy.
I was disappointed to see so little posted here about him. and I'm not sure how people find out about him unless it's physician referral or patient referral. He doesn't really advertise the fact that he does WLS.
you can email me if you have anything else I can help with. I log in here once a week or so and try to catch up with posts---if you want to talk to me specifically, just email me.
