I hope this isn't a silly question but I was wondering if caffeine is out after surgery...like coffee. This is prolly a silly worry but if I don't have coffee every morning right when I get up I get the worst caffeine headache. So there's my silly question lol. Huggles and love, Keli

I really don't know. I know you can't have the carbonation from soda's. But I don't know about the caffeine. I'm not a coffee drinker and cut out all soft drinks since surgery. Hopefully they will figure something out for you. Becky

I think it depends on your surgeon. Mine said caffeine won't hurt anything and if it didn't bother me, I could have it. Many don't want you to have it because it can be an appetite stimulant especially in combination with the sugar. But I don't do sugar so I have to have my caffeine. My doctor let me have my diet cokes back at six months out from surgery. So I did without caffeine for six months except for the few cups of coffee I had when I just desperately needed some caffeine to get me going. I am not a big coffee drinker but I do drink some diet coke every morning. Hugs, Melissa

Hi Keli Caffeine?? OH MY, I have gotttttttttttttttttta have it. I wake up every morning with a headache. After my first 1/2 c of coffee, my headache is gone. It took months after surgery to figure out why I was waking up with these horrible headaches. I am so glad that I drank a cup of coffee just cause I was craving it. Cause now when I wake up with a headache (I have one right now, cause my coffee is just now making) I drink my cup of coffee and PRESTO, I feel all better. Jo

Totally not a silly question at all. I too am a Diet Coke junkie!! LOL But, I thought I would just die after surgery having to do without soft drinks. I guess the initial couple of weeks I was concentrating so much on everything else, I didn't have time to worry with the fact that I can't have it anymore. But, once some normalcy came back, I do miss it. We can't have the carbonation, but I will let diet coke or diet dr pepper sit out and get flat then drink it over ice when I just HAVE to. I'll be glad when we get released to have soft drinks again. But, I'm only 3 months out, so I bet it will be awhile. I can't drink cofffee, though. I guess I'm not old enough.....LOL. Best of luck to you!!

Well, I dunno, cause I don't drink caffiene anyhows, but I think it does make you more susceptable to dehydration, so just be sure if you drink it, you get LOTS of other fluids in.... Smoochies Arlies

My nutritionist said that if you drink it too early after surgery it WILL stretch your stoma. My first several attempts to drink diet coke after surgery were not good. I felt it go all the way down and stop. It hurt. I kept on trying though and can drink them now. I usually pour them in a glass though to get the fizz out. I cannot drink a whole can coke at a sitting and a 2 liter will last 2 weeks at my house. I actually prefer the Hawaiian punch that I am addicted too and I enjoy my protein shakes. Every now and then I want a diet drink but try to stick to the clear ones like Mountain Dew or even a Diet Sunkist. I am also very addicted to SF Red Bulls. Caffeine is a hunger stimulant.. so ... the less the better but we cant always do that.
