Learning to eat/drink with that new pouchie is kind of hard in the beginning. I remember when my doctor moved me to more solid food like canned chicken and tuna and anything kind of soft. I didn't chew a piece of the chicken well enough and it was stuck. I thought I was having a heart attack. I didn't know what was going on. I called a friend from support group and she said wait it out and chew better next time. I didn't like her answer so I called my surgeon. He said the exact same thing so I waited it out in misery for 6 hours. YUCK! Didn't eat chicken for three weeks after that. And boy when I did and when I do now I chew the hell out of it. I hope you feel better soon, girl. Not pleasant when the pouchie is acting grouchie. Love ya, melissa

What have you had today? The liquids should move very quickly thru and not stay in your pouch for very long? The stoma is very small but the liquids should still go striaght thru and not gather in the pouch for long. Did you drink really fast? No gulping remember!! That will hurt. Maybe burping will help.

Oh Dawn you have no idea what a food addict I am. Head hunger is very hard to deal with. Its definatly a very very hard thing to get used to. I ate sausage 6 or 7 days post op cause I wanted it. I was still supposed to be on liquids. I chewed food up and spit it out just for the taste and to satisfy my head cravings. I am by no means recommending this but that is how I coped with it. I did it alot in the beginning and now I am better but there are occassions when I still do it. I may get flamed for saying some of this stuff but I am a true blue food addict. I mourned and still mourn the loss of food. I miss eating things I want. I am trying hard to get better and to recover. We are in recovery, ya know? You have to have support. You have to find things to take your mind off of food. We will all have good days and we will have bad days. Once you get to where you can eat solids things will get easier but that head hunger is awful! I ate lots of eggs in my early stages. Try very hard to get your protein in first and try very hard to stay away from carbs. Of course you arent on food yet.. but when you are---trust me.. The carbs will make you want to keep eating. Protein seems to keep that hunger away. Cheese, chicken, slim jims... etc... tuna... Protein protein protein. I am so sorry its so hard for you. I have been there. I am still there. We will fight those demons forever possibly. This surgery will give us the tool to help control it and also help us learn to eat properly. Its definatly not a cure all but it helps of course. I am hear for you. Call me anytime you wanna talk. We will get Melissa on 3 way. She is a huge support for anyone. She has lots of ideas to help with head hunger and several books. I dont care who sees my numbers online... Home number 601 261 3979 or cell 601 606 4592.

Guess I Know now why diets didn't work for me!LOL I do fell like next week will be better for me when i can have puree foods! Do i have to put scrambled eggs in the blender? Thanks again for your support i couldn't do this with out ya'll. DAWN

I never put anything in a blender and I never ate baby food but I chewed it up very well. I am no doctor though and so dont listen to me. Haha... I am also probably not the best person to listen to cause I have my pitfalls but I know where you are and I know how hard it is. My doctor seems to be a little more leniant than others but follow what yours says. Make very sure whatever you do decide to do that you chew chew chew before you swallow and eat slowly. That pouch will be full before you know it and then you will really be miserable. Relearning to eat is hard and I still have difficulties. Its very hard for me to sit around when I am done with a meal and watch others eat. It literally makes me ill. When I am done I want to get away from the table. Ask Melissa... When I have had my last bite- I am rushing her out the door. I am also afraid the more I sit there the more I want to nibble on it. Full or not so I get myself out of the situation. Its much easier to dine with post ops than regular folks.

Christine, I dont know if you can do this??? I used to work with severely mentally handicapped students and their school lunch was blended for them because they could not chew. When blended foods are allowed, could some foods be blended? I know that Arlies mentioned refried beans and potted meat, but I was wondering, they used to blend up pizza, veggies, chicken pot pie, almost anything and the kids loved it, but can the pouchie tolerate it? Just thinking! Also in the Chinese grocery stores they have Knorr Chicken powder. It is like boullion but made up of real chicken which is cooked and then dried into a powder. Tastes great, much better than the cube stuff. I am planning to bring a can with me from HK. How about the stock from Ramen Noodles, it is less salty than Chicken Noodle soup which I used to love but find too salty now........ I wrote down your numbers too, hope it is ok, would like to ring you when I come home! Smiles, Cheryl

I dont see why those things couldnt be blended up but some of that might be too greasy. The pot pie would be good and the veggies. I never really had a puried stage. I went from liquids to soft foods after 10 days and was pretty much told to try whatever I wanted. If it sat well..... go for it. Refried beans, mashed potatoes, grits, etc...Boiled eggs... soft boiled eggs... I didnt do jello too good cause I dont like it. Pudding was good. I tolerate milk fine so I drank milk. Crystal lite was good.. I dont do it too much now cause its too sweet. I would boil 1/2 dozen eggs and carry them as a snack wherever I went. I should probably get back into doing that since potato chips have been calling my name mid morning. I love Ramen noodles and the broth from it should be fine. I had some really good chicken broth in the hospital. It was real good. I think it was Knorr. Not sure though. The sweet cold stuff got old quick... Very quick! You call me anytime. I would love to chat with you.
