Just Curious

Hey guys, I was just curious about something. I had a hysterectomy in 1995 and 2 distinct things I remember them telling me was that they had alot of trouble getting the bleeding to stop during surgery and that I could not take the morphine pump as it kept me throwing up. Do you think me telling the doctor will be enough or should I go ahead and request copies of my records be sent to me to take to him. And if so, would the copies of those records be at the hospital or the doctor's office. Sue 270 / ? / 140

I am sure that it would be okay just to explain to him what happened and he can make a note of it in your charts, if he would like a copy of your charts his office can request them from either you or your other doctor. You should be able to contact the doctor that performed your surgery and his office could send a copy of your records over to your surgeon's office if needed. All I had to do is tell my doctor that morphine makes me itch and demoral makes me throw up. They noted it in my chart and just gave me some benedryl with the morphine. I only hit the morphine pump one time during my stay in the hospital. They had to give me pain medicine through my IV because I was having the dry heaves so bad. Best of luck with your process.. I am sure everything will work out for the best. Rhonda

From watching the surgery on broadband, there doesn't seen to be a whole lot of bleeding involved in RNY, so I think you'll be okay on this one. As Rhonda said, you mentioning it to the surgeon should be enough, the office would obtain further records if they wanted more info. As for the morphine, I had a pump but I couldnt tell a difference with that thing, I opted for demerol the whole time I was in the hospital, it was taking care of the pain quite well. I went home with a script of liquid lortab, trust me I'm a big wussy when it comes to pain and I did just fine with what they gave me. Have a great week!! ~Andie~ 334/201/173

I have DSL and would love to go watch it because as soon as i can get back on my feet and moving forward again I am planning on going to surgical Tech. school. And I love watching surgeries. I usually keep my tv on the discovery health channel. Thanks, Angie Bea

Hi, Sue. congratulations on your impending surgery. Just tell surgeon about these particular situations with previous surgeries and he will make adjustments when he writes your orders. The narcotics of choice for PCA pumps post-op are either demerol or morphine. Demerol causes nausea for me, so I had the morphine. The morphine, after several doses, started to cause some mild itching, so i asked for some benadryl and that settled down. Your tendency to bleed with your last surgery is a different matter. That could have been caused by the thinness of your blood or a low platelet count. Be sure to mention this to your surgeon BEFORE surgery. A couple of simple blood tests prior to surgery will help the surgeon predict, beforehand, your tendency to bleed too freely, and could prevent a major complication. When the surgeon explains the risks of the surgery to you, he will tell you that the major risks are bleeding and infection. That is your opportunity to tell him that you have had bleeding tendencies with previous surgery. Then when you get closer to date, and he starts ordering pre-op tests, be sure to remind him again. hope everything goes smoothly and you get by as easily as I did. Janice

Not to be negative but tell EVERYBODY so there will be no mix ups. Be sure to mention any tape or latex allergies to EVERYBODY. WRITE DOWN THESE SPECIFIC ITEMS TO FAMILY WHO WILL BE W/YOU. Communication is key to this event!! Keep everyone in the know. glenda

Sue, Just be sure to tell Dr. King. As far as the Morphine making you Throw-up. If King knows about this he will probably put you on a Demerol, Nubaine MIxed with Phenigrin for nausea. That's what I was put on. It worked great! The Phenigrin is an anti-nausea drug That will counter-act The "woozy" effect of the Demerol or Morphine. The Nubaine is great except it doesn't Work for everyone. Let him know everything. Best Wishes- Dx
