Protein Drinks
I got some Carnation Instant Breakfast tonight at Wal-mart. It was expensive. I got a pack of 4 and it was $4.54. Ugh, I also got a 4 pack of Atkins shakes and they were $6.33. Is the powder a better way to do this. I guess its not that expensive but looking at the protein amount in each of them I am gonna have to have alot of those a day to get my protein in. For the CIB- I would have to drink 6. For the Atkins I would have to drink 5. I thought I saw some shakes that had 40 or more grams of protein in them. If you know what they are please let me know!!
Guess what - My surgery is in 7 days!
Thanks yall!
Christine
Oh and I looked at Roses and at Wal-mart and I cannot find a Moo-Moo -Moo-Moo girl recommended that I get some (that would be Kristi E for those who dont know)... Any suggestions? I figured I would go to Shirleys this weekend. Anyone know if they have them?
You know me... its gotta be pink and black - or just pink would do!
I guess I will go there then. I havent been able to find one anywhere else. I didnt get a chance to go to Katherines. I will stop at Katherines first and then to McRaes... ya know how long its been since I went to the dern mall! Ugh... I will be going more once I can shop at LERNERS... Woohooo...
Hey how are you doing on your weight loss. How do you feel. I got my book. THANK YOU!! I have almost read the entire book! My skinny friend wants to read it when I am done...
SURGERY IN T MINUS 5 DAYS AND COUNTING!
Christine - have you tried the CIB already mixed? Personally I think they taste awful!! The powder mix is much better in my opinion. I went to GNC last week and they have protein supplement powder as high as 60 grams of protein per 12 oz! I bought the 20 gram one (for one it was about half the cost). Right now, at 3 weeks post-op I am supposed to drink 3 protein drinks a day (fat-free milk plus a scoop of protein supplement plus one pouch of CIB) and it actually tastes pretty good. So by drinking 3 drinks a day, I'm getting roughly 69 grams of protein plus the food I am eating.
One note for you - although I hadn't had any problems, one thing has kind of become a problem - and that's bowel movements! I was in absolute misery because it hurt soooo much. I called my doc and they told me to take a stool softener - it helped and I feel so much better. Sorry to be talking about something kinda nasty but trust me, if it happens to you, you'll do just about anything to get relief!
Back to the protein stuff. For the 20 gram protein supplement at GNC, I paid about $18 for a 5 pound cannister. And for CIB powder, I paid $2.99 for 8 packs. Only problem is, I can only find chocolate! Although I love chocolate, it gets old after awhile. I add 1 scoop of supplement to the CIB mixture...
Another hint for you is to stock up on sugar free jello and puddings. They are GREAT! I had also bought sugar free kool-aid, but it's so expensive, that you can use the cheap kool-aid packets and instead of adding sugar, use Splenda (about $7 a bag at Wal-Mart). I was told you can get Splenda at Sam's (2 bags for $10) but I haven't gotten to Sam's to get any yet.
Hope all this helps you! Good luck and you'll do just fine. By the way, I've lost another 9 pounds this week! So my total so far is 33 pounds since D-Day (Sept. 7th)

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!! OPINION AHEAD!!!!!!
Now this is ONLY an opinion, but at one of the support group meetings, someone (Dr Blake? Kristy?) said they preferred we use fat free skim milk to get our proteins. Also mentioned the sf Carnation Instant Breakfast, but encouraged us to stick to regular foods due to the expense...Course I have not researched the protein amounts, but just thought I'd throw this in. Also you may want to try Susan Maria's site, w w w.bariatriceating.com. Susan is a good egg and will send you samples, etc. and help you choose what is good. 7 days!!

Hey yall... I did get some splenda. It wasnt cheap either and it was the small box.
I got to reading the back of this CIB and it has 12g of sugar. It says its sugar from natural milk sugar. I wonder if this ok after surgery? Do they have a completly sugar free CIB and I just missed it? Maybe I should go to GNC instead of wal-mart. I think I am getting stuff I dont nessecarily need.
I guess I will have to go to regular foods. I dont understand what the heck I am reading on these labels.
I did go to bariatriceating.com - I havent ordered anything yet, but I will. Cant decide. Think I am gonna get the variety pack of shakes.
Lucky for me, our support group puts together a basket full of chapstick, shakes, protein bars, etc.. and brings it to the hosp. Its so nice to have all of yall and them to make sure we get what we need and not buy the wrong stuff..
Talk to yall later!
CIB comes in sugar free, it's a blue box and says 0 carbs 0 sugar. They have it at the Wal-Mart in Magee so I assume it's in most others as well. But the only flavor I've been able to find so far is chocolate.
Before I had surgery I bought some stuff - sugar free jello and pudding; sugar free popsicles, and some Campbell's beef and chicken broth. They taste pretty good actually. Oh and I also got some canned chicken (like tuna fish size cans).
Good luck!
