When you take in something your system can not properly digest, it will get rid of it. There are many different forms of dumping. Here are some symptoms extreme diahrrea vomiting sweating feeling faint light headed severe abdominal pain/cramps sleepiness(have to go immediately to bed to sleep) From what I have read it is mostly caused by intake of sugar, but can be from many other types of food.

I agree with Donna, but I have also heard too many carbs and too much fat can also cause you to dump. I gather it is a very unpleasant experience that you don't want to repeat!!! Smooch, Arlies

Not stupid at all Jo, Dumping is an extreme intestinal reaction to something that you've taken into your system that will not absorb because it has "bypassed" the portion of your intestines that would normally aid in digesting it. Typically for a lot of us it is sugars and with some it is also fats. If these are introduced to the intestines further down the line without there normal processing, the body reacts to them as if they were toxins. All of the water in the body floods to that portion of the bowel, leaving the person with a shaky, dizzy, and generally uncomfortable feeling that is quickly accompanied with extended, explosive diarrhea. It sounds terrible, and it is. Until the body has evacuated all of the substance, it has the same feeling as food poisoning. It tends to show up more with those who have had the RNY rather than a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty. This however is the silver lining- If you are lucky enough to be one of the around 60% of WLS folks that has Dumping Syndrome, and I am, it means you may TRY to enjoy a cheat of a bite of pie or ice cream-Once. You may even try twice, but suddenly your body will win out over your desire. If every time you eat a certain thing and it has the same effect on you as eating a box of Ex-Lax, quickly those foods lose all of their appeal. A safe rule of thumb is, "If Sugar is in the first three ingredients listed on the label" pass it by. I can have things with sugar in them, just not in any concentration. For example, most Bar-B-Que sauces are right out, even Ketchup if I have more than a little dab. Fried food**** me too. As a result, I tend to LIKE healthy foods now with low levels of sugar and fat. 370lbs 08/03 to 224 06/20/04, and still dropping. Thank Heavens for "Dumping." Dx
