Im still in the Pre Op stages..and never a really big smoker.. but My Surgeon and Staff has Asked that I stop smoking the moment I started the Process way back in OCT. It much easier giving up a few cigs here and there then giving up the chance of getting this surgery. How much of a smoker are you? Did they have to take A Pulmonary Function Test? Good Luck with your Surgery. Let me know how your doing smokefree. I will tell you That I feel great knowing that Leaving smoking behind is gonna make my surgery safer for me.

I am also pre-op and I had to get a letter from my PCP stating that I had quit. The risks of developing pnemonia after the surgery are much greater if you smoke up until the surgery. They wouldn't even go a step further until I had quit for three months prior. I have stopped since Oct 20th,2003 and I now feel confident in going forward with my plans for wls. If you start smoking again after surgery it is my understanding that you can develop ulcers on your esophagus and in your pouch. Please stay strong and confident with your decision to Quit smoking and know that it is better for all. Good Luck and God Bless Tonya
