I just went to my health tracker and it looks like my BMI was 59 on 6/10/10, when I first started tracking. Now down to 36.9 and he operated on me w/o any problems.

No that was not the HMR program, it was just what he asked me to do prior to surgery because I had a"fatty liver". I was po'ed because I was the only one and others were planning their "last meal". So I went out and bought bar-b-que that night...the only time I broke from the 4 weeks of liquid!! I do not know your age, but I was 58 when I had surgery and other than a slight bump at 3 weeks, it has been a life saver. Go to the BMI over 50 OH forum and ask some of those folks about surgery at the higher BMI. they might have more information.

The 4 week liquid diet...was that the HMR program? I had given that a try in spring of 2010 and failed. :( My BMI is close to 60, so I am very concerned he's going to tell me to get it down before surgery...but that's the reason I'm having the surgery.

I do not know about everyone, but when I went to class before surgery, I was the only one on the 4 weeks of liquid protein drinks and liquid meals before surgery. I had a BMI over 50 when I started. I have no idea how high of weight or BMI he goes to, but I think it has as much to do with the size of your abdomen and the tools they use for the laproscopic surgery. Anyway, keep researching he will answer all questions. I did lose 30 lbs before surgery so the four weeks worked. I think the liquid diet had to do with liver functioning prior to surgery.

I live in St Louis but was born and raised in Joplin. I started my search with Dr. Hargroder in Joplin. He is a former transplant surgeon and now does the Mini Gastric bypass. He is VERY smart, compassionate and open to giving his cell phone out to his clients. He does not take insurance, at least he did not in 2006 when I was researching him. I still wish I could have had him as a surgeon. However, I had many reasons to have surgery in St Louis instead, so that was what I did, cancer, medicare etc. I would highly recommend talking to his staff and looking his website up. David Hargroder, was on McClelland before the tornado. His office was destroyed --I do not know where he is now.

Does he make everyone lose weight before surgery? Is there a max BMI that he won't operate on?

I liked him. He is very busy and thorough. Doesn't spend alot of time with you chatting, but does his job and gets out. I make sure I have questions written out so I do not forget any that I want answered by him. The surgery consult is longest appt. I had with him. Good luck Cecelia

Does anyone live close to joplin? and if so what doctor did you first go to? and where did you find a surgeon to do your surgery? I am looking into the RNY by pass, heard it is the best. and pretty easy surgery where you dont have to go back for several other things like tightening and slippage.
