Misery describes my week.  My right started bothering me Monday and was worse Tuesday so I went to the eye doctor.  I had erosions on the eye.  He gave me a prescription for an antibiotic to prevent infection. He also prescribed 2 O-T-C products so my meds were $80.  Max had his procedure Wednesday and what an awful day for me.  Everything went well except I couldn't see out of my right eye so I drove home in the rain seeing out of one eye.

The pain was unbearable and by Thursday morning I couldn't see a thing out of my right eye.  I went back and my eyes was infected.  He had me put in a drop of the antibiotic every hour and every 2 hours overnight.  Not much improvement when I saw him yesterday.  He's really concerning about the infection.  I did the same routine yesterday and overnight.  No rest for me.  My eye is a little better today.  I can keep it open a little and I can now see colors.

Really has me worried.  Can't read and can barely read on the computer.

I see him at 8 a.m. Monday morning.  He said call over the weekend if it got worse.  I'm about out of antibiotic.  The bottle I bought was $40 for a very tiny bottle.  He gave me a couple samples but I'm about out of that.  Hope I don't have to buy another bottle, but if it clears it up it will be worth it.

Say some prayers for me please.

Jan, so glad to hear your Michelle is doing well.  My son is loving his new job.  He talks to my husband every day and Max is so encouraging to him.

We really had a great meeting last night ...we had 4 pre ops that 2 of them have their surgery dates already....a daughter and her dad....her surgery is Nov 3 and his is the 4th ...but in different towns by different doctors....then two others that are going thru the hoops to get it done and of course a bunch of us old post ops ...we had a room full and it was really good to see everyone again...
Oh i almost forgot to say , at the meeting last night i said i had lost 8 pounds this month, dont know why i said 8 , i would be worried about me if i did that for no reason i think? I did lose 5 lol dont know why i said 8 didnt realize i did until Joe ask me about it. Sorry if i mislead anyone didnt mean to. wi**** had been.  if this keeps up tho i might just get to my goal weight.. lol ...i have changed most of what i eat completly....eat very very little meat anymore it just dont want to sit on my stomach like it should. It makes me sick most of the time except fish and seafood and chicken if it is fixed right....i am getting plenty of protein in a lot of things and if i dont think i have i make a protein shake.....am feeling a lot less slugish...and didnt think about it till Brenda brought it up last night but all the veggies we are eating are fresh out of the garden or frozen ones that i have put up....so they dont have all that sodium in them like things that are canned....that may be part of it for sure....
Had all my labs done the other day and all are great. ....at least the ones that are back yet. ...havent heard from Dr. H about anything yet so i guess the levels were good for him too. will see...probably will email Margie and see if they were all ok with them...

Just got a phone call from Michele while ago , she was at a garage sale and said this lady had 6 boxes of canning jars with 15 boxes of lids and flats and she has 15.00 marked on them did i want them...told her yeah and keep an eye out for a pressure canner.

Sure is nice to be able to answer the phone calls from Michele at odd hours without knowing that she would be drun****ep praying that God will make it last. she is learning so many things about herself i think...she said she looks and feels so much better.
I thank God daily for what he is doing in her life....and hope he will continue to show himself to her.

well got to get busy , have to make sure i have something clean to wear to work.  I have to work the next 3 days , i know i am going to be worn out by the end of that. but i need the time so i can get things paid off.  want the checks in December free and clear so we can plan our get away for the winter lol ....

talk to you all later. love you all

Topic: Anyone w/WLS in St. L area who is an OA attendee??
I had RNY 5/2007.   I lost 80 lbs., but have gained back 40 lbs.    I need help with my true addiction to food.    I am interested in finding someone  with a like situation to mine.

I recently joined an Overeaters Anonymous meeting in St. Louis area......but, what with my surgically altered GI tract.....the issues that I face are different from those in the meeting.    I'd like to find someone that I could relate to that knows exactly where I am coming from (re: WLS).

I would welcome any comments/suggestions here on the message board, or you could contact me personally.
Thank you.

Vegetable of the Month: Sweet Potatoes

Photo of sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a Native American plant that was the main source of nourishment for early homesteaders and for soldiers during the Revolutionary War. These tuberous roots are among the most nutritious foods in the vegetable kingdom. They are excellent sources of vitamins A and C. This is why one colonial physician called them the "vegetable indispensable." Sweet potatoes are often confused with yams, but yams are large, starchy roots grown in Africa and Asia. Yams can grow up to 100 pounds and are rarely available in American supermarkets. Nutritionally, sweet potatoes greatly outweigh yams. Because of the common use of the term "yam," it is acceptable to use this term when referring to sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes contain an enzyme that converts most of its starches into sugars as the potato matures. This sweetness continues to increase during storage and when they are cooked.

Selection

Choose firm, dark, smooth sweet potatoes without wrinkles, bruises, sprouts, or decay. Even if cut away, a decayed spot may have already caused the whole potato to take on an unpleasant flavor.

Storage

Sweet potatoes spoil rapidly. To keep them fresh, store them in a dry, cool (55-60°) place such a cellar, pantry, or garage. Do not store them in the refrigerator, where they will develop a hard core and an "off" taste. If stored properly, sweet potatoes will keep for a month or longer. At normal room temperature, they should be used within a week of purchase. You may brush off any excess dirt before storing, but do not wash them until you are ready to cook them. It is the moisture from washing that will increase their spoilage.

Preparation

Wash sweet potatoes well. Cook them whole whenever possible as most of the nutrients are next to the skin, and skins are easier to remove after they have been cooked. Pierce skin with fork. Place potatoes in a pan and cook in an oven heated to 375° F for about 45 minutes or until tender. Cool potatoes slightly before removing skins. Sweet potatoes can be cooked in a microwave oven to save time. Wash and pierce potatoes, then place them on a paper towel. The cooking time for 2 medium potatoes is on high for 5–9 minutes, and 4 potatoes, 10–13 minutes. Yellow and dark orange sweet potatoes can be used interchangeably in recipes. Try not to mix the two types in a single dish, because their different textures and cooking times may affect the outcome of the recipe. The yellow variety takes longer to cook than the orange and will be done at the upper range of cooking times.

Varieties

Although sweet potatoes are harvested in August through October, they are available in supermarkets all year. Many stores feature them at Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are two varieties of sweet potatoes; the pale yellow with a dry flesh and the dark orange with a moist flesh. The dark orange variety is plumper in shape and somewhat sweeter than the yellow variety.

Makes 8 servings.
This is an official Fruits & Veggies—More Matters recipe.

Ingredients

6 cups peeled and finely shredded sweet
potatoes
1 cup finely shredded onions
1 tsp salt-free herb seasoning
1 2/3 cup unbleached flour
1/3 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 cups finely shredded zucchini
¼ cup lemon juice
1½ cups egg substitute
6 tsp canola oil, divided

In a large bowl, mix the sweet potatoes, zucchini, onions, lemon juice, herb blend, egg, flour, and parsley. In a large no-stick frying pan or griddle over medium-high heat, warm 2 tsp of the oil. Drop a large Tbsp of the batter into the pan and spread it with a spatula to form a thin pancake. Add more batter to fill the pan without crowding the pancakes.

Cook for about 2 minutes per side, or until golden and crispy. Remove from the pan and keep warm. Repeat, adding the remaining 4 tsp oil as needed, until all the batter has been used.

Hey y'all,

Sure wish we could make the support meeting tonight, we really miss those when we are not there.  I posted on the OK board to see if there was any support meetings other then those for patients of surgeons and can you believe that in a city like Tulsa there is NO support meetings, the ones that are here you have to be a patient of the surgeon that holds it, I was so surprised.  I did get one response from a girl in the area that has just been OH certified and she is going to start one soon so that will be great.  There are like 3 or 4 surgeon supported ones but since I did not use any of the surgeons here I can't attend, ai yi yi.

Things here are going good, been really busy with classes and home work, I'm behind on my reading so hopefully this weekend I can get caught up, otherwise it's all going really good.  Susan's dad is doing much better, we had to take him out the other day to get him an OK state ID so that we could apply for him to get a new S.S. Card, some how his got lost and the S. S. office would not issue another one to him without a picture ID plus we had to take him to the S.S. office in person, they would not let Susan do it even though she is his POA, a bunch of red tape if ya ask me but I know it's all for his protection, it just made for a long day for him.  To get a state ID we first had to take him to the Okla. Dept of Safety, they filled out the paper work and took his picture, then we had to take that paper work to a tag office where they filled out more paper work and took his picture again, then they compare that picture with the one taken at the dept of safety, sheesh what an ordeal.  We have to do the same thing when we go and get our drivers lic. transfered, the wait at the dept of safety will be a killer, ai yi yi.

Well anyway, as you can see we have been keeping pretty busy with this and that.  Jan how is the job going for George?  Are the training him for the other postions yet?

Hope y'all have a great meeting, maybe next month Susan and I can make a quick drive to Springfield to the meeting, we'll see.

Y'all have a great weekend!!

Don't work to hard Jan, sounds like they are keeping you extra busy.

Be good,

Andy

Im still looking for yesterday lol dont know what happened to it? except that i had to work last night and it was so so bad. right at supper time they came and said you have a new admit....OMG.....it was horrible and just went down hill from there. ....one page of info on this person. list of meds that she takes , I guess. and bottles of pills and 3 of those were narcs. that had to be counted ....then all of the paper work that i had to try and get done before i could do any of my other stuff. was swamped, just so thankful that no one fell or hurt themselves or i would have really been in a pickle...when someone falls if no one sees it happen we have to assume that they might have hit their head so then we have to do neuro checks as well as a full sit of v./s every 15 mins. for 2 hours then it goes to half hours and then hourly for a full 72 hours. crazy huh? all of this takes a lot of time as well as all of the paper work that has to be filled out too. there is about 4 pages of all sorts of things that have to be filled out and then charted on for the next week in the chart. ...as you can see most of the time nursing is nothing more than a medically educated sec....the job is about 95 percent paper work and 5 percent nursing anymore....that is why so many nurses get so burnt out on nursing. they went into nursing to do nursing and they , because of state laws and regs. dont do nursing the CNAs do all the nursing. for the most part.  well enough of my ranting. lol

thinking about putting in a fall garden of some things. like broc. and beets and carrots.  maybe some more peas. i didnt get to put up near as many of those that i would have liked to...
oh wow i dug a hill of my sweet potatoes up yesterday .....wow....i got 10 large sweet potatoes from one hill....one potato will be way more than Joe and i need for a meal. they are so so pretty.
now i will have to figure out where i can keep them.....will probably make a place for them in the shed somewhere. will need a big box and straw i think ....will have to go online and see what i can find out about how to store them ....guess i could cook them and freeze them in portions but dont think they would be quite as good as fresh  dont know but would be better than letting them ruin....
anyone out there know how to store them without having a root celler,. that is something that we have thought about doing for a long long time just havent gotten it done yet. making a storm ,root celler but were going to do it outselves if possible.we have the plans to do it and it looks feasible just finding the time to do it.

well ive turned sort of chatty this morning havent i?

Tonight is the CIRCLE OF FRIENDS  support meeting in springfield, looking forward to the meeting not to the long ride getting there and coming home....good thing i have such a great hubby or i wouldnt be at most of them if i had to come by myself..it is 83 miles there and 83 home so it is quite a little ride. and sure isnt straight roads until you get out to 65. told Joe that we need one of those little 2 man helicopters. lol that is something i would buy if i won the lottery ...zip we could be there quick as a wink ....lol

well got to go have a bunch to do today , only have today off then have to work the next 3 days yuck. really getting tired of working .....but about have 2 bills completly paid off....yippee....then to work on the other two big ones ,,,,and then to get all the little medical bills paid off,. .

talk to you all later ....got to go...love you and the ones that wg ill be at the meeting will see you there.

Susie are you coming tonight,...Jeanie? Sugar wont be there she is on her way with Rick and Ricks parents to Fla for a week i think....they take more trips and vacations than anyone i have ever seen lol.
