Jan....
We bought this little house w/property last year (June) and it has quite a bit of land with it... the older folks that sold had been avid gardeners ..who alas, had let the place go due to their inability to take care of it. The lower back yard (it looks like a park) had approx. 30-40 ft. of grapevines, blackberries and thornless blackberries... it was an overgrown weed infested, leaf infested mess... the leaves were approx 1 ft. deep (I kid you not) as there is a HUGE oak tree not too far from this run down arbor.
I cleaned it.
WHEW
pruned back the berries to good heavy dense canes... got rid of all the overgrown sucker cane that couldn't produce good berries... very gently untangled the grape vines and will be tending to them once Mike builds a new arbor... right now everything can BREATHE and the ground can dry out a bit... the lower 8-10 inches of cane was red/white due to the lack of sunlight hitting it... then... mowed the ENTIRE 3 ACRES with a push mower (grass was up to our knees) and then raked it...
Pruned the entire front shrubbery hedge in front of the house ... cleaned out two large flower beds...
I think that about does it for my listing... tomorrow will be weedeating and cleaning out more flower beds... down in the lower back yard I have approx. 100 ft. of overgrown narrow flower bed. It is a tumbled grassy mess of old daylilies, and other what not. It is probably going to take me one entire weekend to tend to that. I am going to remove it since it is an eyesore which will free up the mowing and the flow of the yard. I will be transplanting the old plants in various places in the yard where they will be getting the sunlight that they need... right now they are under a mess of trees and it is just years and years of overgrowth...
btw... can you tell I like to garden??
Another plan down the road is my water garden/waterfall/concourse... but I want to get these overgrown beds tended to first... after this one I have ONE more that is as long but unfortunately it is about 10' wide... ooohhhhh boy that is going to be fun!
