Applying for surgery jitters
Hi all,
I am new to this. First I want to say to everyone who has went thru the surgery, I highly respect your courage!! I am so afraid, just thinking about it brings me to tears.
You see I had to have surgery a few years back, and I almost died.
I have read the stories from some of you that did have the surgery and it does help. I plan to call the doctors office Monday to make an appointment to apply for the surgery. I am 289 lbs and my BMI is 51. "Super Obesity".
I remember when I was young, just 109 pounds at the age of 23. Now I hate to look at myself in the mirror, I have diabetes and other health problems due to my weight. I have tried everything to loose, even that awful cabbage soup for two weeks straight and I just swelled up like a ballon, LOL.
Well, I welcome your replies and please be gentle, I am a newbie to messageboards and would hate to get yelled at, LOL. I would like to communicate with someone that has had the surgery.
No one will yell at you here. Welcome to the boards, it is always nice to meet new people. It seems like you have a reason to be scared about surgery, if you don't mind me asking what was the problem before. There are always risks whenever you have surgery but doing ALL the research and carefully picking your doctor helps reduce the risks. I wish you all the best in your journey. Keep us posted and ask all the questions you need to.

Hi Wayne, Thank you for your welcoming me and others like myself.
I have done a lot of research on wls and my neighbor just had the surgery, she is doing really great too. I have been thinking about getting the surgery for over a year now and finally made up my mind to go for it. But like I said, I am fearful of not waking up during surgery. Back in 2000 I had to have oral surgery, I remember waking after surgery while the nurses and doctors were pounding on my chest and screaming for me to breathe, I could not get my breath and back out I went, this was repeated again, then on the third time, I finally made mysefl take a breath. I could sense the panic in their voices while they were pounding on my chest.
I hope Dr. Udobi will do my surgery, for I have done research on him and he seems to be quite experienced with wls and takes all precautions before and after surgery. I am prepared to meet my maker just in case, but I am not ready to leave my loved ones behind. If that makes sense.
Have you had the surgery? If so how did it go for you, and were you fearful?
Audrey, yes I have had the surgery. I had mine done on 12/22/05 so I'm about 3 1/2 months out. It is very common to be nervous and scared be fore any surgery and this is not minor surgery. It sounds like you have done the research and settled on a Dr that you are comfortable with, this is a major part of the journey. If i can answer any questions or lend any support just let me know.

Audrey first off welcome to the board. Second I havent had the surgery but am in the process of getting it soon I hope.
You know each of us have to do what we think is best for us. No one can tell you what to do , it is your body and life after all. If you are scared then I would say that you arent ready to think about it too much. On the other hand the problems you have are not good either.
You have to decide for you, What was great for others might not be right for you.
Be good to Audrey first and foremost. Study all you can ,find about the surgery and talk with others that have had it and then, you can make up your mind.
You have taken a good first step to find out what you need to know here at this forum. There are some wonderful people here that will give you all the information that they can about them selves and their surgery but still the ultimate decision has to be yours.
