vitamins.......i'm confused!
i am starting my pre-op liquid diet today. the nutritionist told me i needed to take a multivitamin and a calcium before surgery. then after surgery i should take vitamins that were only made for bariatric patients. i've looked at vitalady, bbvitamins, and bariatric advantage. i'm supposed to take a multi, calcium, iron, and then get a b-12 shot or sublingual. can anyone recommend where i should go for my vitamins?
also yesterday i bought designer whey protein at wal-mart. it was vanilla (20g protein, 3g sugar, and 5g carbs). it said add it to your favorite beverage. wouldn't that be skim milk? but then the milk has 11g carbs. isn't that too many carbs? can you just add it to water (yuck)? right now i'm only working part time so money is kinda of tight, but i want to get good vitamins and protein drinks at a reasonable prices. if any one has any suggestions please let me know.
If you can tolerate milk I think it is better to mix protien mix with skim milk. It gives you carbs but also protien and calcium. You can get protien that tastes like kool aid too. Unijury will sent you free samples and so will Susan Marie. You can find their info on obesity help. I just take a flintstones kids vitamin , but my wife prefers liquid vitramisn we buy ours at vitamin world. Gnc sells are we need to or you can order off the internet. Obesity help store sells vitamins too. Some people buy their vitamins at Walgreens. My wife takes a subliminal b12 I take a b12 shot as I think I absorb the shot better. You can jazz up shakes with frozen fruit like strawberrries or blueberries. I add peanut butter too. IF you can tolerate dairy add a little sugar free ice cream to your shakes too.
My doc allowed peanut butter in shakes when we got on the full liquid diet. Peanut butter is easy to tolerate and has protien too. On a clear liquid diet you cant add too much but on the full liquid my doc allowed lots of things. Check with your doc though each doc has different rules. I am not crazy about shakes so I had to jazz them up anyway I could so I could get them down. I only stayed on shakes a short time and as soon as I could eat enough to get my protien in I just ate healthy foods and quit the shakes. That was back in 03 now my doc wants people to stay on shakes for a year. I recently tried to do some shakes but they dont fill me up anymore. I can have a shake for a snack but if I try it for breakfast I get hungry real fast. I stay fuller on oatmeal or eggs and sausage or ham. When you get to where you can have protien bars the south beach and atkins bars are real good and keep me fulll for a long time. To me they taste like a candy bar so I have not trouble eating them. I went to a salvage grocery store and stocked up on them real cheap like $.19 a bar for south beach bars. I got some out of date atkins products on line for like $3.60 for 15. They were brownie almond and are good. I am a cheapskate and I bargain shop. At the salvage store I got atkins muffin mixes, pancake mixed, ets real cheap.
Where are you having your surgery done. I had mine in Sedalia and they sell optisource chewable vitamins they are pretty good but they do cost 20.00 a bottle a bottle will last you a month. At the beginning that is all I took because they have everything in it I needed. If you can't get those there are chewable vitamins at Wal-mart. About the protein I have Maximum Protein from GNC (that is its exact name for it). I hated it at first because I was mixing it with milk, I had the choc and the vanilla, I couldn't stand it. Then I started mixing the choc with water and you wouldn't believe it but it was really good. Then I took the vanilla and mixed it with coffee. You should use decafe coffee. There is reduced sugar hazelnut or french vanilla creamer in the fridge section at walmart. I put 8 oz of coffee, one scoop of protein and about a 1/2 tablespoon in a glass and mix it well. (make sure you put the cold creamer in the coffee first because if you add protein in very hot things it will clump). This is great it taste like a cappicino. You will probably have to keep heating it up since after surgery you won't be able to drink very much at a time. Try the water with the choc. or any drink you like. If you go to GNC they will let you try samples of their powder before you buy it. They also have an unflavored you can get and put it in anything you want, even soups. I know everything seems so confusing but believe me it will become clearer as time goes on. God bless and if you have any other questions you can email or place them here and someone will help you. Have a great day! Penni
