Are there many that are my age that have had the surgery? I am 65 and was wanting to hear of any and all special trials you might have had that would be different because of age. Thanks.

my best friend had surgery right before her 56th birthday and she is doing great! The only thing she had to have special was a ... i cant think of the technical term at the moment, but it was basically a little device to catch blood clots before they get to the heart. That was because she had a history of blood clots though. I have heard of older people having the surgery with no problems, so I dont think there is any thing special that would happen to you. on the other hand, I really dont know your situation or health status, but I wouldnt worry too much as long as you trust your doc and yourself with the procedure.

Jan, I am 58 years old and had surgery about 6 months ago. I did not have to do anything extra because of my age. I think it depends more on any particular medical conditions you might have. I had high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I was able to have my surgery Lap, so my recovery was fairly quick. There is a forum on OH for people who are over 50. There are many people on that board who are over 60. You might want to post your question there if you haven't already. Here is the link.http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/over_50/ Linda

Jan, I hate to admit it, but I am 68 and had the surgery on 11-14-05 and absolutely had no complications or anything done any different because of my age. To date as of yesterday, I have lost 50 pounds. Before surgery I had high blood pressure, and I am completely off my medicine with my b/p running 130/68. The main reason I had surgery is because of my joints as I have degenerative joint disease and had hip replacement 4 years ago. I am very active and still work as a nurse 2-3 days a week. Hope this helps you. Colette

Hello, just wanted to say that we had a lady in LA have the DS last fall, and she had it lap and she was 72 yrs old. She is off her diabetic meds and most of the others too. She did really well for her age and she looks great. She is one awesome lady. I hope you find what your looking for, I am having the DS in 2 weeks, and I was scheduled with Dr. Hornbostel here in Sedalia last summer he said his oldest patient was 61. I'm not sure you will find a doc in Missouri to take you. I don't know about the ones in Columbia though, I know I would be looking into it though. I wish you the best on your journey,...and I hope you fine what your looking for. I know when I found this surgery (DS) it was like a ton of weight had been lifted off my back,... I just knew it was the right decision for me. God Bless Marylin

Good luck Marylin on your surgery. I had dr. Hornbostel so I guess I am the oldest now as I was 68. He is a great doc. And I feel fabulous. Colette

Oh awesome Colette,.. it was last year that I went to his meetings. I am so glad your doing well. I enjoyed going to his meetings and talking to everyone. When I changed my mind and called to cancel his office kinda made me feel funny. Maybe they just didn't know what to say to me. I really enjoyed his staff and all there. Keep up the good work. God Bless Marylin
