First time here
My name is Jan Cook I live in Cedar Creek , Mo. No i know most of you will not know where that is..It is right on Bull Shoals lake. below Forsyth, Mo. I have filled out my papers for the surgery at St. Johns in Springfield and they are going to be sent out today. Cant wait. I am 65 years old and have been overweight most of my life. There have been times when I could exercise that I was able to keep my weight down so i was in a size 12 but seems something always happened and weight would go back up to being fat. I have yo-yo like that for ever it seems and each time add just a little more to it. Present I am at 254 pounds and am only 5foot 3 inches tall. I have a wonderful supportive husband that seems to take on more and more housework all the time. I use to love to dance , it was something I lived for . and at one time when I was younger I taught dance for Arthur Murray. Now it is hard to do even one slow dance with my husband and can never finish a whole song. I have joint problems in almost all my supportive joints. back, hips, knees, ankles, feet, I also have high blood pressure and am on medications for that. Tired all the time because cant sleep. most of the time what sleep I get is in the big chair in the living room. When filling out the forms for the doctor I couldnt answer the dates and stuff about diets , dont remember them just remember I have been trying one diet or the other for years. I never went to the doctor for weight loss help because I couldnt afford to spend the money on a doctor for something that was in my thought then , not being sick. Anyway I have been reading all of your thoughts and concerns for each other on here and I know that I am going to have to have lots of help . I dont have many friends since I cant get out and go anywhere much anymore. So hopefully i can find some here. Thanks for listening to my ramblings and hope that I can get approval from Medicare soon.
Welcome to the Missouri board Jan...if you have questions just ask and someone will try and help you. There is a support group in Springfield and it would benefit you a great deal if you went to it to enhance your support system. I'm sure your surgeon's office will have details of it for you.
Good luck on your WLS journey!!
Kelli
Welcome, My wife and I live not too far from you in the Village of Bull Creek. We go to the meeting in Springfield the second monday of the month at 5 30 pm. Maybe we will see you there. We go for our yearly check up with our wls surgeon in Batesville, Arkansa thursday. I am over 2 years post op and my wife is almost 2 years post op. Let us know if we can help you we are old pros at this. I have an aunt who is over 65 and working on getting her surgery too.
Thanks David.....yes I know where Bull Creek is. Maybe we can meet at the meeting....I plan on going to the one Feb 20th is that the one you are talking about? It is an information meeting? at 6pm in room 4A
I am getting excited about surgery and havent even heard anything from anyone yet....yea to your aunt. hope she gets approval. My sister would love to get it done but her insurance absolutly says no...says it is cosmetic ..lol i would like to know how they classify it as cosmetic. ...
thanks wayne.....from your picture i feel like i know you from somewhere. were you in rehab in St Johns in 1999 ? thanks for writing me ...I sure hope this goes fast. We are leaving for vacation the first day of Feb. and will be back on the 18th so hopefully will have messages when we get back. I took the letter to my pcp this morning with instructions on what they want her to write. Im sure she will get with it soon as she is as anxious as I am to see me get this weight off. ....
Oh i have read and read and re read all the things i can find on wls. thought i knew all the procedures but found one i know nothing about now ..it is called the duodeanal switch. any one know anything about it????? is it new or just different????
The duodenal switch is different in many ways. It is a much better procedure than what they were doing years ago. Most of the negative things you hear about it is from the very old version that isn't done now at all.
If you want to find information about it, you can read my profile:
http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/members/profile.php?N=S1099701441
and come over to the DS board here:
http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/posts.html
There are many nurses there and doctors and medical people who have had the DS. We had to work to find the information, and we give it out freely.
Good luck in your journey!
Jeanie
Welcome Jan.
Just had to write you and tell you that I am 68 and had it done on 11-14-05. I too, got to the point where my joints and bones hurt. At the time when I thought about it, I thought well I am just too old. But actually my ortho doc suggested it to me and my pcp too. To make a long story short, I also had degenerative joint disease, high blood pressure and now I am down 49 pounds and off the blood pressure medicine and it is running 130/68. I feel great, work 3 days a week as a registered nurse and sleeping great. I saw the dr, and insurance (medicaire and bc/bs approved it in one week. Hope this helps. Gee I must be the oldest!!!!!!! Colette
hey I am a nurse too and was just thinking that if I can get this surgery and lose enough I might go back to work part time. I had to quit because of my pain in my knees and hips. Lets face it working as a nurse is about as hard on you as being a lumber jack or construction worker lol
Where do you work part time? Thanks for answering me ....Hey someone how do you get your journal started? where ? dont know if you are the oldest i bet there is someone older than you tho. Jan
