First off always remember. Dont get discouraged!!!! We all have had to jump, hop, skip, run, crawl, ect thro the hoops that the Dr.'s ask us to do. I also went to Dr. Scott and he told me I needed to lose close to 80lbs. Before he would do the surgery. Pending everything else checked out also. Boy if that wasnt a slap in the face. Made me feel like Bill Engvall was gonna pop out of the closet and say "Here's your sign" "You know your fat when the Dr. tell you. That you have to lose weight before he will perform weight losee surgery"
And to be honest for always I was really upset. I mean that was the whole point of going to him in the first place. But after calming down and straightening my ruffeled feathers. I realized that what he is telling me is for my own good. For several reasons: 1) If you was to have a leak and weigh more then what the catscan machine will allow. He would have no way to check where your leak or other problems are. 2) The more you lose the better it actually is for you. Since they will be going in around your liver. 3) Plus, Even tho the Dr. says you need to lose 100lbs that doesnt necessarly mean that he will hold you to that 100lbs. He may just want to see how motivated you are going to be on your own. To his way of thinking if he cant get you to adhere to a diet and follow thro with it now. What makes him think you will after you have the surgery.
Just do the best you can and find something that will work for you. I started counting my carbs. I stay away from soda's all together. No caffeen (sp), I drink at least 60oz of water every day, I have cut out alot starch. breads, rice, pasta, potato, anything that turns to sugar. I've went to freash veggies (salads) and proteins. No sugar only sugar-free items.
If I can be of any help even if you just want to talk. Please feel free to email me and drop me a line. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Best of luck
Melissa

I was told the same thing, to lose 40 lbs before surgery, well I did NOT lose 40 lbs before surgery, I lost 20 and then got a date and went on a month long 'last supper' frenzy and gained 10 lbs back!!
Bottom line here is, he wants to see that you are trying to adhere to some kind of eating plan. What I did was, I asked him, "can I do ANYTHING to get this weight off on a non - permanent basis?" he said yes, it doesnt have to be long term weightloss, just get it off so I can operate.
So, I went on a salad diet and stopped soda and started taking propolene. I also started protein shakes, joined curves, and took vitamins. Well, the next month I went back and lost 12 lbs or so. I was pretty happy and so was he. The next month I had lost the other 8 or 9 lbs and he scheduled. Then I basically went off everything that I had done and waited till surgery time.
If you can just do ANYTHING to get off 20-30 lbs as fast as possible, he may do surgery sooner. I was about 390 when I had my Lap RNY done, not 350. I asked Dr Scott what is the biggest he has done Lap RNY on and he said 450 lbs, soooo I know it can be done. Dont give up, dont give in, just do whatever it takes to get those few lbs off before your next appointment so that he sees that you are trying. Also another thing he likes.. he told me to keep a food journal, so I did one up on him::::
I made up a Food Journal, Thought Journal, Medication Journal, and graph showing my progression of weight (from his scale and 1 other scale) He thought that was great and I put anything that went in my mouth on there, even candy and alcohol! Try these things and see how they turn out for you, you might be more surprised than you think.

Edward, there are certain Drs out there who will do surgery for a high risk patient (I guess bmi over 60= high risk) Each time you call a different surgeons office (if they tell you no) ask them if they know of a surgeon who DOES do surgery for super morbidly obese patients.
Also, check with the main message board. Leave a post asking about surgeons who do surgery for people with BMI 60+.
You may have to travel to get the surgery, but it is well worth it if you can!
Also I think there is a forum on this website that pertains to people who have a BMI of over 60 and they will be a great source of info for you.
Good luck and keep us posted on your journey, Kristen M.
