Help! My pre-surgery diet failed

I have qualified for surgery except my insurance required 6 months of physician dieting. I am on the edge for laproscopic versus open procedure. They told me to lose 20 pounds. In the last 6 months, I have been stressed about this and my diet has failed. I've exercised, dieted, hurt my knee, stopped exercise. I went off Prozac-which is an appetite surpressant. Now I am at the end of the 6 months. I have to admit that I didn't lose any but didn't gain any either....I am embarrased. When I diet, I feel hungry and I don't see results quickly so I lose patience. My belief is that the surgery will mitigate the hunger and help me see quicker results. Now I have to tell the people at the surgery place that I have failed...

I just don't understand why they want you to diet before surgery it's just crazy. It's not like we all have not went on one before.I would not tell them you failed you really didn't you didn't gain so that is a good thing maybe if they don't do the surgery find a new Dr.Don't be embarrased you did just fine I'm one to tell you DIETS don't work if they worked NO ONE would have surgery..LOL...Best of luck to you.. Thanks Shelly. At one of the group meetings for pre-surgery, they said a candidate had a date for lap procedure, didn't make her weight loss so they cancelled her from the program. I am within 5 pounds of the open versus lap limitation....I think that's why they want the weight off. Thank you for the encouragement. They want committment to an eating program to prove you can stay on it AFTER the procedure. It's Barnes-Jewish hospital so I know they have lots of successes....it's just very emotional and stressful......

I think they will do open. They prefer lap. It's just so close. I don't care either way - pluses both ways. I've had abdominal surgery in the past that was open and they used a lap method to go in a repair a mistake from the open (so, I guess I've had both). I know I can handle the pain - it's the pureed food that scary Thanks, I should know the outcome in the next few days.

Last minute update: I was all ready to go open. Surgeon called and they want to pursue lap (with a possibility for open, if needed). Things are moving forward.....I have one more weigh in with my doctor and we can file for the insurance approval. It is NOT excluded from our plan. Maybe by spring.....
