Well I posted here for the first time this week and was so happy my insurance covered this surgery. I called them today to get something in writing and they told me they do NOT cover surgical WLS, only non-surgical treatment. My employer has a written exclusion for this surgery. I wish the first person wouldve looked at the policy more carefully. So now what do I do? Look for a new job that has insurance that covers it? Anyone work at a hospital in the Kansas city area that has an insurance that covers this? I guess I begin my waiting "journey" now like so many of you Ive read about. I knew it was too good to be true when that guy told me they cover it and I also knew where I work they are always cheap skates LOL Any advice would be appreciated. Jan

Jan don't give up. Find out what the appeal process is and start writing an appeal letter, see if your surgeons office has an insurance coordinater that can help with the appeal process. Also talk to the person at your work who handles the insurance and see if they have an appeal process to have the exclusion lifted. Don't give up without at least checking into the appeal process and if worst comes to worst maybe you can find a job that does cover the WLS. Good luck and keep us posted with your progress. Wayne

WOW You can appeal even if they have a written exclusion on the policy? Jan

Hello, Jan I am kind of in your same situation. My husband's work has a policy that excludes any services related to obesity. I wrote my husband's boss a letter and asked him to consider allowing us to change policies. My husband said that he read the letter and then my husband saw him looking at insurance on the internet. I am hoping he will consider changing policies for us. Everyone at his company complains about the benefits anyway. If this doesn't work, I will be getting a job that has insurance that covers this. Maybe you could qualify for Medicaid or Medicare??? My cousin had Medicare and never thought they would cover it but they do almost 100% of the time. I think insurance companies need to take some lessons. Anyway, good luck and know that I will be praying for you as I go through the same thing.

Also, if you aren't too far from Liberty, MO you may check their hospital. They are hiring but not sure of their benefits.
