Question about Blood Sugar
Hello everyone. I am now 8 months post op and life has been great. I have lost 129 lbs so far. I have been having some problems with my blood sugar though. I was wondering if anyone else was having problems keeping theirs regulated? I did talk with my doc about it and he wasnt concerned just said to drink orange juice or eat a piece of fruit which I usually do but I am wondering if this is common with wls patients? It started out that everyday around 3:00pm if felt as if my blood sugar would drop. Now it happens at least 3 times a day. My mom is a nurse and she checked it over the weekend when I felt it was low and it was at 52. She was very concerned and made me eat some peanut butter and crackers, she had no juice at her house. It came back up but then about 4 hours later it dropped again. I didnt get it checked again but I could feel it. So do any of you have this problem and If you do what do you do for it. Thanks, Chas
I was just thinking about you last night. I visited your profile and read about how much energy you have. I'm glad that things are going well for you.
I don't know much about blood sugar, since I've never really had a problem with mine. In fact, post-op, I don't think I've had low blood sugar one time. I don't know how long you've been having this problem, but the fact that it is happening 3 times a day is kind of scary. You should probably have some glucose tests run to make sure you don't have the opposite of diabetes (whatever it's called). Also, I don't know if you write down everything you eat, but if you keep a log, you might find that you aren't eating enough of the right kinds of foods to sustain blood sugar, or eating things that causes a spike and then a crash. I don't know...I'm not a doctor or dietician. But you already knew that

Wow, you look awesome!!
You aren't taking any kind of diabetes medication are you? I think that you should just plan on eating like 6 little bitty snacks throughout the day. You know what you feel like when your sugar is low...so when you get that feeling....be sure to go and get something to munch on. I've heard that a slice of cheese can do the trick. But, your doctor really needs to figure out what's going on with you so you can do whatever needs to be done to fix it. Ask your doc about do a hemoglobin A1c. I work in a hospital lab and this test will give you an average of your blood glucose level over the past 3 months.
Hope this helps,
Kelli
Hi there,
I have had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) since before my wls. It is something I will continue to deal with even with wl. The most important thing is to eat protien. You may have to add a snack here and there depending on the frequency. All foods break down to glucose, but protiens take the longest and sustain the blood sugar levels longer. If you are having the low sugar feeling you can eat a cracker and peanut butter like you said, the cracker is faster reacting and the peanut butter will sustain.
I would still go to the Dr. and have it checked out. It really is never good to self diagnose and treat something your not sure of. Better to check it out and be safe than sorry.
Take care and I hope everything works out ok.
