I keep hearing about problems with internal hernias years after gastric bypass, it scares me, I have had 2 hernia operations in the past, will this make me more likely to have that happen? SherryWhite

Hell Ya. I had surgery 12/28/2004 and next Tues I am having a huge very painful hernia operated on. They say chances are good that I WILL get another. My activity level has dropped to ZERO because of the pain, and I eat vicodin three times a day. I have lost 65lbs going from 300 to 235, and I was feeling pretty good until three weeks ago; but wow this sucks...

Sherry: I can tell you I am almost a year out and have had no complications to date. However, life throws us many curves and there are no guarantees. But the benefits I am enjoying from this surgery have made it worth all the "what if's". Hang in there. Michelle -146

You will normally feel a bulge wherever the hernia is. Mine is at the top of my incision. WLS surgery has many risks, I have had several complications but some don't have any. It's a personal choice... that said I would probably do it again. Good luck

Yep, there are risks with this surgery. About 3 weeks post-op I was bleeding internally due to a bleeding ulcer in my new stomach......I lost half of my blood and was put in intensive care while they fixed the ulcer and pumped new blood and platelets into my body. Since about 6 months post-op, I have also been suffering from a really BIG hernia.....It looks like I have an alien inside my belly, protruding out. It is very painful, and I hope to get it repaired soon, but I'm waiting until I lose about 30-50 more pounds so I can have a tummy tuck in correlation with the hernia repair (to minimize the amount of surgeries I'll have to go thru). All of these complications have been stressful and painful......but I am 210 pounds lighter at just 1 year post-op.......and I feel like a million bucks! I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat! Hi Sherry, The only complications I've had after losing 100 lbs is having my gallbladder removed and while they did that, they found a small hernia. The hernia was because of the surgery and the way they did it, and is not uncommon the doctor said. It never hurt...I didn't even know I had it until they had me opened up. I also get dizzy a lot, so you have to really make sure you're keeping up with vitamins and water. I've come to terms with it, and figure I'll just have to live with it. I'd say the surgery was surely worth it though...I have lost an entire person! Chrissy 283/181/140
