I have a really strange question, guess I never really thought about this before but when you are on the liquid diet after surgery, is it ok to take the bread or not. I am not even going to try the wine, but I just don't know what to do about communion. I feel bad if I don't go up there, but then if I go up there can you take the communion or not, I DO NOT want to get sick at church. It's not like I have ever seen a nutrional guide for communion so whats a catholic suspose to do. Thanks in advance, Theresa

The BEST thing to do would be to call your dietician for advice. I'm sure she/he has heard this question more than once and knows EXACTLY the right answer. I have read others talk about this (I am not Catholic!), and they have said that they DID take the bread and wine immediately post-op. Most of them said that they only took one sip of the wine and that the wafer wasn't any big deal. If you're only a couple of days out when you first go back to church, you might want to pass on both, but after the first week, you really shouldn't have any trouble. It would be different if you were expected to eat a loaf of bread and down a fifth...but we're talking miniscule amounts. Pamela -102
