I have/had very thick hair and now I am losing it big time. About a handful or more everyday. I don't want to lose it all. What do I need to up in my diet to make it quit??? Thanks, Christy 325/247/156

Hi Christy, I'm not a WLS patient (YET) but I have been reading profiles and trying to get a lot of my questions answered before I have the procedure. I had read that one person had used zinc supplements. About 6 months ago my daughter's hair was thinning due to some medications she was taking and I had her try zinc. It worked great for her. I don't know if it will be the same for you, but you may want to give it a try! Best Wishes, Peggy

Christy, I had class with the dietician yesterday and I remember lack of proteins in the diet as one of the contributers, however I would call the Dr's office and the dieticians office and confirm. I love these boards but get it from the horses mouth would be my advice. By the way your looking great in your pro pics~! Gevin RNY Scheduled for 1 June 2005

I've pretty much heard that it's impossible to stop the hair loss. I've read so many profiles and posts of people who are taking extra protein, extra vitamins, hair and nail supplements, AND Biotin, and they still lose their hair. What a waste of money! You might lose a lot of hair, but since it's very thick, it won't be noticeable to most people. In fact, losing my thick hair was a blessing, because it could finally lay right. After about three months of hair loss, it starts to grow back, and a couple of months later, it's as thick as it always was (kind of a shame, really). Try not to stress over it. It grows back! Christy: I am 4 1/2 months out and have been losing hair big time for some time. It feels like a handful but if you really look at it... it may be several long hairs. I have read many posts and have been taking hair/skin/nails vitamins 3x a day (per dr.'s office instructions) along with additional protein. As I understand it.. there really isn't anything to stop the hair loss. Some people try nioxin shampoo and conditioner but I understand that helps hair grow... not help hair loss. Your hair will eventually grow back. I am going to go get my shoulder length hair cut short next week. It was extremely thick but looks kind of thin and ratty now because of the hair loss. I look at it as, new me, new hair! Keep your chin up and good luck! Roberta P. lap rny 1/3/05 -83 lbs.

Hi Christy, I went through hair loss around 5 months post op. I was losing about a handful per day, everytime I ran my fingers through my hair..there went more! I made sure to get in 60g protein every day, take my mulitvitamin, and 1 GNC 2500 Biotin every day. The Biotin really worked I am thinking because it stopped about a week later. Best of luck....
