Unfortunately, there really isn't much to a liquid diet. There is clear liquids, which is basically stuff you can see through. Broth, jello, water, crystal light, juice, gatorade...nothing very exciting. Then there is full liquids. You can have the above stuff, plus have milk, protein shakes, pudding, creamy soups (no chunks). The liquids you choose should be sugar-free (juice and gatorade being the exception) and fat-free (or close to it, in the case of protein shakes and milk). There really isn't a whole lot to choose from, I'm afraid. And it definitely doesn't require chewing or involve a milk shake! Pamela -102

Jeff, I have to go on a clear liquid diet starting next Wed. in advance of my upcoming surgery. They defined clear liquid just as it was above: clear things you can see through such as broth, sugar-free jell-o gelatin, fruit juice (dr. told me to cut mine 1/2 & 1/2 with water), etc. Also, there is the option of sugar-free flavored waters. I tried the Fruit 2-O Plus, which is sugar-free, but also has some good vitamins in it, and it was pretty good. I want to check with my doctor on one thing, though. There are these protein drinks now that are fruit flavored and clear. I don't know if those are acceptable for pre-op, but I am sure they are post-op. There are a few of brands of these clear protein drinks; the one I am trying (after I get my shipment on Monday) is Isopure brand. Those have zero carbs, zero sugar, and 50 gm. of protein per serving. One serving is made in 12 oz. of water with one scoop of the powder, so obviously if you are post-op, you would probably divide a serving into two or three for your consumption throughout the day. It also has only 200 calories, fyi, as well as other vitamins/minerals packed into it. Also, there is a brand called Nectar that I hear is really good tasting. The point of the pre-op liquid diet is not only to clean out your system, but also to allow your liver time to shrink down as much as possible, which will help the surgeon better access to work on your stomach, etc. Good luck and I can't wait to be a loser; 12 days and counting for me. - Beth
