RNY surgery next week- 29th w/ Dr. Hornbostel
Hoping to find others on here who had him and learn what your experience was like pre op and post op.
I absolutely adore this mans personality! I am getting nervous as the day approaches so thought it'd be good to come join the board and see who else is out there in my area to talk to, etc.
I am 33 yrs old, 397 lbs. Mother of 3 (10, 2 and 1) and would love to hear your stories.
How was it post op first week, etc. How bad was the pain? Any complications? Was it easy to follow the post op diet? I'm on the pre op diet right now and finding it sooooo extremely hard. I'm doing it, but I have to seclude myself away from others who are eating. lol

you are going to be surprised about how little you even want to eat after surgery...really ...You have picked the best as far as surgeons goes and he is always there for you ...after surgery you will see him in the hospital which a lot of the surgeons dont do. that is unless he has a surgery to do or some emergency in that case usually Margie , his wife and nurse comes sees you....they are both super nice. they give you their home and cell phone numbers in case you have an emergency....I am almost 4 years out and they still want to keep track of me and how i am doing.
there are a lot of people on here that have had him as their surgeon and no one has anything bad to say that i know of....I wish i could have gotten the surgery when i was your age so i could have enjoyed life more. and with your kids you will have the energy to keep up with them ....it is wonderful and you will wonder what you were really worried about....just follow the rules and the first little bit after surgery the main thing is walk and sip sip sip water water. you will get so tired of everyone telling you to sip sip sip sip....you wont be able to take large drinks it will hurt so just sip sip sip....your goal is to get 64 oz in a day after a few day then you will need to start working on your protein. will need protein in some form of liquid, either ready to drink like isopure or something. that is pretty good since it isnt made with milk...later you can get fancy with powdered proteins mixed with milk and maybe some frozen fruit for smoothies....enough info?
i wasnt sore , i did have diarahea for about a week , and if you do it isnt anything to worry about. rest and sip and get up and walk often. dont want blood clots to form...take care and let us know how you are doing

Myla,
I didn't have Dr. Hornbostel but think he's tops. If you weren't getting nervous we'd worry about you. The post-op diet is easier than the pre-op because you have a tender new pouch but the main thing is to do exactly what Dr. H says about advancing your diet. He's had LOTS of experience so he knows what works best so that you can be successful. Any hunger you feel in the first weeks after surgery is probably head hunger because your pouch won't feel either hungry or full at first. Just measure everything and eat exactly what you're supposed to and stay away from the dreaded white carbs, sugar, potatoes, flour, bread, pasta and rice. Those are usually the things that made us fat in the first place and they are what we usually crave most but they can also make you dump big time and so just avoid them. There are many other things you CAN eat and as I always say, "I've probably eaten or tasted everything in the world before surgery anyway so I can live without it afterward." It's not really about what you can or can't eat - it's about a new way of life for the rest of your life but the rewards are so awesome that you'll be ridiculously happy. One thing I think those with young kids find is that they change their kids eating habits after their surgery and don't keep the unhealthy pop and chips and snacks around and the kids (and husband) are second hand winners too. Especially your little ones, they will grow up eating healthier and hopefully never need surgery. My DH has lost 65-70 pounds since I had surgery just from not having the unhealthy stuff available. Hang on tight because you are in for the ride of your life. Oh, I almost forgot. No lifting the little ones for several weeks after surgery - ask Dr. H about the timing. The 10-year old will just have to help you with the little ones.
Hugs

I used Dr H and I highly recommend him. He is am excellent surgeon and I believe he really cares about his patients. He explains every thing in the book he gives you and is always available by phone. I think you have picked the best. I had a small hernia repaired at the same time and still didn't take all my pain pills afterward. A year later he repaired some adhesions for me and I consider him a super surgeon. If I had to do it all over again I would pick him again. Relax, you are going to be in good hands.
After surgery the hunger is not there. You may have some head hunger but you are not really hungry. Follow his rules and it will all go smooth.

Thanks ladies!!!!
I went for my anesthesia clinic today and my BP is too high right now for surgery, so they are starting me on meds to lower it and hopefully still be able to do surgery Thursday the 29th of this month.
I cried. I had no idea my BP went up like that recently. It's been high before, but the last year was pretty good--- usually nothing over 140 top number and not over 80 for bottom number....
anyways, we'll see how it goes.
I'm so nervous and anxious and scared and excited and happy and sad... haha! i'm just praying that surgery goes well, i get no clots, no breathing tube in me when i awake and that i get through the first couple of months with no health issues that would require redoing any surgery.
i wish i could just wake up tomorrow and have the surgery and not physically have to get up on the table and do it.... lol... wish they could come to my house, drug me in my sleep and do it. hahahaha!
I just want to make sure I wake up. Surgery scares the poop outta me.
