argghhhhhhh I am beyond peeved. Went up there today... they had rated our son at only 20% and deferred the most troubling of his medical issues, why I don't know, but they did. We have been waiting for 8 months, waiting for the call or letter telling us that he had another appt. to review to supplement the deferments. Just found out today that the deferments are now outright denials.
Now you tell me how a kid was in over 360+ missions. Several IED explosions that rendered him unconcious , fractured bones that required pins and plates and now he has a wrist that is bum because of it and none of it is service connected and not compensable.
Why? During the skirmishes he was not in a tent city. He was out in BFE most of the time. There was no sick call. Unless you were severely injured enough to be carted out by chopper or medivac you soldiered on and stayed there. So guess what? All of this wasn't written up in his records therefore it didn't happen.
UM... of course the wrist couldn't be ignored...so their reasoning? He was released from PT therefore it is all "healed".. hellooooooooooo they couldn't do anymore for him.
We now have migraines so severe from the multiple explosions that he takes medicine for them... they are weekly... he has vision problems, back issues (from the explosions) hearing problems, memory problems...etc. etc. etc.. nightmares out the wazoo...but but but... he is ok.
I am about to scream.

Jan thank you for the suggestions. I am going to regroup today (deep cleansing breath) and I am going to contact his case worker at the Missouri Veterans Commission.
I was told yesterday that if he appealed the deferments that it would take all of two years OR MORE to go through the process. We could ask for a redetermination on the deferments that would start from the date of filing that would be much quicker (much much hopefully under a year) but that would make him loose his original filing date of last August so basically we would loose 8 months if they find for him and give him back pay.
So you sit and weigh the options. Wait for at least two years of more or loose 8 months of filing status for something much quicker. He is unable to work right now due to the headaches so I will wager that we are going to go with the latter choice...
It is just incredibly frustrating... he did what he was supposed to do...and did it well and this is how they treat him?

Pixie,
I'm so sorry this is happening to your son. The worst part is that there are so many out there who are not hurt and don't have a claim but they don't want to get a job so they file and jam up the system for those who truly deserve it. It is soooooo frustrating. I will be praying for a speedier resolution for him.

Thank you for the suggestion... I cannot in good faith go to another service organization such as the DAV ( I know they do good things) as we are already being represented by the Missouri Veterans Commission through the Fort.
They basically do the same thing and the lady that we have at the Fort (Alfriedia Williams) IS WONDERFUL. Not only has she been doing this for a long long time but she is also ex military and used to be a Master Sgt. so she is pretty adamant about getting things taken care of.
The frustrating part of all of this IS the VA "machine".... you have to work within their guidelines ...which is infuriating at times.
They deferred Matt on his TBI, Concussions and Migraines saying that they don't exist yet they ARE TREATING HIM FOR THEM!... this is what is so frustrating... and as I type I have a boy lying in the dark in his bedroom with a killer of a migraine. Started yesterday afternoon and he quickly took his meds... still raging full bore... yet according to them... they must be a figment of his imagination...
I still want to scream

HI Pixie, long time huh?
I just have to throw out what saved my life from migraines...an option for him to maybe check into???? I just stopped taking these pills last week to see how I do now after 8 yrs of taking them EVERY night! I had horrible migraines for years...tried NUMEROUS meds that I would take as I felt one coming on...either they didn't work well or made me feel VERY strange, but what DID work was taking Inderal and Elevil in combination..it's a beta-blocker and anti-depressant in low doses that when combined are effective in PREVENTING migraines for some people.
Besides WLS, this was the other life saver in my life! After having multiple migraines monthly and sometimes weekly, I wen to only having like 1 a yr.
I hope your advocate at the Fort is able to help you get the solutions you need for everything else! This sounds like a nightmare!
