Protein grams. Do you count them daily?
Hi there.....
Everyone that has a different doc, will give you their docs specifications! All WILL agree tho, that protein is VERY IMPORTANT in your diet and should be the first thing you eat on your plate AND you should get your protein in daily.
Yes, from my pre-surgery diet to the present, I keep track of my daily intake of protein and I TRY to get in between 65-70 g PER DAY...Sometimes I cannot accomplish that simply by eating, so even at almost 3 yrs out, I will still do protein shakes, or eat protein balls.
The protein powder that I do-has 24 g of protein per scoop, and so when I do that-I can usually eat the rest to get it all in.
Hope this helps somewhat! I wish you luck, and take care!

Hi Nancy,
First, let me say CONGRATS!!! The journey has just begun and the easy part is over with! lol.... I wish you the VERY BEST OF LUCK...and want you to know that if you need ANYTHING at all, to please, please, please let us know and if you have any ?s, get on here and ask.....they are the best bunch here on the Missouri board-I love these people here! K.... On with your answering your ?s.
I personally have tried several protein powders-and my favorite, by far-is the Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Protein. I buy mine at Food 4 Less because its $20-$30 cheaper than the health food stores and I buy the huge jug. I LOVE the vanilla, double chocolate and strawberry. However-I would make sure that you really like it before buying the huge jug. For instance, I bought the strawberry only after I tried the samples, because the jug lasted for 6-8 weeks, doing from 3-5 shakes PER DAY! I had to do the pre-op liquid diet for 6 weeks pre-op-so it lasted through that and into surgery post op.
I would LOVE to send you some samples, Nancy-BUT...the last 2 times I tried to send some samples to people, they were confiscated by the post office-sooooo......I would recommend going to some of the websites that give free samples-wish I could remember all of them. lol.... its been a long time. I know the Susan Maria sight use to give you 2 free samples of protein. You can always get on and post and ask for websites that give free samples. On the protein balls-since they have peanut butter in them, you wont be able to have them for a couple of months, but you can get that recipe off the recipe board OR I will send it to you when I find it. I dont remember it by memory alone. I wish-but its fairly simple and I use chocolate and vanilla. either or as far as the protein powder....jazz it up a bit. It also uses oatmeal.....peanut butter......the powder. I will find it.
Let me know if you need ANYTHING ELSE! This is going to be a very trying time...your new tummy is like a newborn baby, not what you had before surgery-so everything is brand new and I recommend, very strongly, getting a food journal-and keeping track of what makes you dump-and then try it again in 6-8 weeks....... I wish you the best of luck, Nancy! Hang on, your in for the ride of your life and if you need a co-pilot-lol....make sure and let someone know so they can help ya! Good luck and Best wishes! Janet

Protein equals life and also losing for WLS patients. I try to get in 70g per day and keep a running total in my head. I, like Janet, do a shake if I think I'm running low. At first you need to actually keep a food log and I still use one on my iPhone called Lose It! most days. Using the rule to always eat protein first works most of the time for me and I don't fill up on wasted white carbs ever - white bread, white flour, white sugar, white rice, white pasta or the biggie - white potatoes. I know many out there now eat potatoes, especially mashed, but I think it's a bad habit, for me, so I just don't eat them except for a RARE occasional treat. Mostly, WLS people have to learn to eat consciously and make good choices. We got overweight by eating mindlessly and using food as a comfort to get us through bad times or boredom or anger or any negative feeling. Now, we have to use our success and weight loss to reward ourselves and not turn back to those foods that got us fat. I eat out quite alot and therefore don't order my all time favorite, cheeseburgers and french fries. I eat fish or chicken when I go out and rarely fried anything. I love bagels so when on vacation I can have bagels. That's it or I'd be having one every day. It is so rewarding to still be near my goal at three years out - clothes are my new reward. Best wishes to everyone. Love you all - new and old.
Hugs,
Lana
