Starting Week 3 Post op - a few Questions...
Hi Everyone!
I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend!! I went camping for 5 days at Lake Wappapello, had a great time with the family despite the boat breaking down and fish not biting!!
Well, today starts post op week three. FINALLY I can take my medicine without crushing it up - YUCK! That was nasty, no matter how I mixed it!
Cream soups went well, no problems at all. This weekend I started on mashed potatoes, string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt etc. So far so good! I also started the liquid protein supplement - "Protica"... not too pleasant, but I can get it down.
For all you experienced ones - a few questions.....
1. Any other good food ideas besides cream of wheat and potatoes for this 2 week period?
2. Tried ONE BITE of egg- WOW, that HURT. Is that normal? Too soon I suppose?
3. GAS - good Lord! Cream of wheat and vegetable soup seem to be bad for that... even taking gas medicine.
I know everyone is different, just wanted to poll the board for ideas and input.
Thanks in advance!
John

im three years out and sometimes i still cant eat eggs. just depends on my tummy that day.
Eggs are a very very dence protein when you do eat them you need to eat tiny bites and chew and chew and chew....or you can take your fork and mash them to smithereens lol
i dont eat mashed potatoes because they have too many carbs but at the moment you arent eating that much ...i sub sweet potatoes instead.
i have never tried that protein supplement....is it something your doctor recomended ? check to make sure it is Whey protein. they say that is the only protein that we digest 100% there is also natural apple sauce, sugar free pudding .

GOD BLESS YOU TODAY

Thanks for the info Jan! I will surely cut back on the potatoes when I can get other foods in, I'm watching my sugars and they are still doing well, staying around 100, even with the potatoes!
The protica is a medical grade supplement, I actually found it through Bariatric Advantage, and I'm going to make sure it is whey! Thanks for the help, much appreciated!

at this stage mashed potatoes will be ok, Mash cauliflower up and melt cheese on it. Refried beans with cheese. Cottage cheese. Maybe try a taste of peanut butter. Experiment with your protein shakes. Time will pass fast. Add protein to everything you can it will help. Fry the egg in oil and eat it a bit runny and it goes down easier. Grits work too,add cheese to them.
Like Susie said, mashed up califlower is good, I still eat that sometimes today. I make it up as if they were taters, makes your tummy think its getting taters lol. I would also make up sugar free pudding a couple different ways, i'd make it the regular way then i'd make it like a moouse, i'd take some sugar free cool whip and mix a pack of sugar free pudding with it that way. Also i'd put a couple tsp of sugar free pudding in my shakes, that helps flavor them plus thickens it up a bit sometimes. I know there's more I used to do, cant get my mind to work today lol. Keep up the good work.

I'm 5 years post-op and I still can't do eggs well.
I agree with the mashed cauliflower recommendation. Although I do eat potatoes, cauliflower is less carbs than potatoes, so would be a good alternative to avoid getting back on the carbs too much.
I also recommend you get in your protein shakes!! These are really supplements, not meals and will help you for the long haul in maintaining muscle and reduce hair loss and curb appetite. You probably don't have an appetite much now; but that will return in a few months and protein shakes will help with that.
One thing you could consider (talk to your surgeon to make sure this is OK), but make a pot of veggie soup, then run it through the blender to puree it before eating, to remove any chunks. ;)

I'm 14 months out and still can't eat eggs. For months chicken and eggs tasted a like and I couldn't eat them. Now I eat chicken and most times it tastes good. Eggs, not so. I can eat them in a Fritatta or a dish where there are other ingredients but not just scrambled or fried.
There are a lot of protein supplements that taste good. I like GNC brand. Chocolate carmel is my favorite. Be sure to get in your required protein daily. I ate chili pretty early out and still eat it quite a bit even during the summer. I've never had problems with ground beef. Oatmeal is good. I prefer Greek God yogurt. It's very thick and creamy, not gloppy like other yogurt. If you like yogurt, add some protein powder to it.
Sounds like you're doing great.
