Pre-op for just one more week!

Hi Everyone,

I found the Missouri forum! I'm in Rolla.  I've been doing protein shakes and clear liquids since June 9th and have lost 17 pounds. I also lost 15 pounds on the 6-month doctor-supervised diet.  I have another whole week to go before surgery on the 30th, so I expect to drop some more. Some have said the liquid diet was the hardest thing about the whole surgery, and if that's so, then this will be a breeze!  I must say I practically fantasize about the full liquid and soft food stages! It sounds wonderful, LOL!  I am so looking forward to getting off insulin, losing the C-pap machine, discontinuing some or all of my meds, and reaching my feet!

I do have a question.  My doctor, Norbert Richardson, St Alexius New Start, has told me to cut back on my protein before surgery, because protein is somewhat dehydrating to the kidneys. My creatinine level is a little too high, indicating a kidney difficulty. It's not an emergency, but neuropathy has had an effect, just as it has on my feet.  Have any of you dealt with this whole kidney thing? If so, how are you taking care of them?

Welcome to the Mo.Board!!!!!  I cant help you with any problems with the kidney..  Back when I had surgery in 2005 I had to only be on restricted diet 1 week before surgery and liquids the day before surgery.  It has changed since then.   Since surgery, I am sure to get 60-80 gms of protein a day.  All of my blood results have been fantastic each time.  Just be sure to do what your doc tells you and take all your vitamins daily.  It is not a matter of if I want to, but you must do it and eat right.  It is a wonderful journey and you will be very happy to get rid of all the medicine you now take.  Besides you will feel like a new person.  God Bless, Colette

17 pounds already is fantastic. Protein amounts will change after surgery. I think it would be hard to get too much post surgery unless you ate all day. I do not think I could hold enough to get more than 100.I do not know you doctor but it sounds like they are taking good care of you.  Welcome to the board. Glad you joined us.
The BBF support group is camping out up at the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend. If you can come up or stop by we would love to meet you and be happy to answer any questions.

Exciting times!  Congratulations on your upcomming surgery.  It seems like yesterday I too was on that liquid diet and so excited about my surgery.  I kept thinking everyday someone was going to call me and tell me it was a joke and I couldn't get it done. LOL  You will do great!  When its time for you to eat the soft food you will be so ready.  I remember thinking cream of wheat tasted better than any steak I ever had.  lol  You will be off the meds in no time.  I didn't take any of mine since the day I had surgery.  YAY!  Best of luck to you and keep us updated! You will soon be a looser. ( never in my life was I so happy to be a looser HAHA! ) Lou ;)

Thanks, everybody, for your good comments and encouragement.  I'm so glad I found this forum!  I love reading about each of you.  I've learned a lot from this website, and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the future.
