Eatin' Good Wednesday...protein explanation

Hey all....first off I want to say how sorry I am that so many of you are going thru such difficult times.  Pooh...I will be talking to you shortly.  I really understand what you are going thru.  Susy...I know you are freaked out but it is probably nothing....cysts are actually fairly common...just scary.  And if it turns out to be something we will be here for you.  Cor....we love you and you make sure and keep us posted.

I have received some comments about the way I choose to eat and whether or not I supplement with protein shakes.  So I am going to address some of those things.  First...I am NOT a medical professional so please do not assume that I know anything.  Second...I want to be absolutely clear that I have a different surgeon than many of you and that we as RNY patients are unique individuals with amazing bodies.  Therefore what my surgeon recommends and what works for me may not be what your surgeon recommends or will work for you.

That being said....MY surgeon does not want his patients to use protein shakes as a constant source of protein after 6 months.  He has studied that there are micronutrients in food that can only be absorbed thru the digestion process.  These are his preferences.  He understands the use of shakes during times of pouch tenderness or when trying to reset the pouch.  He wants us to get our 60 to 80 grams of protein from dense protein sources.  Therefore I do not use protein shakes consistently unless I am on a liquid diet for awhile.  Then I use them since they are better for me than Slimfast.

As long as my labs are ok and I feel ok then I do as my surgeon recommends.  What works for me may not work for you.  I know that some of you have a lot of difficulty eating therefore you are not going to be able to do as I do.  So please please please follow YOUR surgeons recommendations and do what works for your body.  That is why I post this thread...so you can see that we have differences and have to find different things that work for our unique bodies.

I have also found that my protein of choice only has 20 grams of protein per scoop.  I use 2 scoops because it tastes better and it seems to keep me fuller longer...not because I get any benefit.  But if I'm trying to jumpstart my loss than I do it this way because it works best for me.

Finally...I have had my thyroid removed.  Therefore my issues are completely separate from the majority of you.  I am completely dependant on my medication and it rules my life (without it I will die).  I have to find the best way to take it to get it to regulate my body correctly.  So I am constantly trying to find the best way to eat that does not cause me constant weight gain.  It has been a long painful year and a half.  Gaining 30 pounds in a month is not a good thing and then taking a year and a half to only lose 20 is extremely discouraging....especially when one eats as little as we do!  haha.

I love you all dearly and I want you to see why my world is a little different from yours.  I encourage your participation and understand if you disagree with me.  But I do what works for me and we are all different.

Outta bed....coffee

Didn't eat until 3:30 (stupid)..protein bar

Dinner was Ruby Tuesday's....Small salad (made sure to have eggs, cheese and ham) and a crab cake (good!)

As you can see...I am woefully short on protein so I should try to have a shake.  But I am bloated and struggling with stupid hormones again so I don't think I will.

Water is good and vits are almost done.  How did you all do today?

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I have to agree with you and the shakes....NOT everyone can drink them....I for instance dump on them...so there for I can not...unless I want to make myself miserable..drink them....
I have had many, many, many people criticize me for not getting the protein drinks in....
So Im with you Miss Peggy....everyone is different and will not be able to handle things that others can....
Im sorry that someone has even questioned the way do things....
In my opinion you look great and are keeping a good eye on what you body is telling you.....
Love and Hugs...

I am sorry to hear people are giving you a hard time. I believe they are just worried about you. People think I eat to much,I do not think so. I know they just want me healthy . I think we all have to develop a thick skin and not be to upset over advice from others. I know protein is very important and however you get it as long as you do is not that important.  We all have off days where we do not do our best. As long as we are healthy what and how much we consume shouldn't be that big of a deal. I personally try to get my protein from food but I do supplement with protein powder. We all know our bodies better than anyone else.

am- yogurt w/ protein

snack - pork rinds and cheese stick

lunch- peanut butter crackers

snack- pork rinds

dinner- slice of ham and yogurt

lots of green tea and vitamins

Hey Peggy,

Isnt it great we are all different.  If we were all the same I think the world would be boring lol.  It is amazing though how one surgeon can do this and that and another can do that and this and even another do something else and it still all work for the individual.  I know there's a couple things that work for Susan that just dont work for me and vis versa, but oh well we're both losing so thats the main thing isnt it? Was kind of an off day but we got through it.

Outta bed - Protein hot cocoa, Susan some fruity protein drink.

Lunch - We both had a small salad with deli turkey, mushrooms cucumber and cheese.

Had a few pork rinds about 3ish or so.

Supper - I made small pizza's with the low carb flour tortilla, had turkey pepperoni, mushrooms and cheese with low carb sketti sauce.  I been on a hot pepper kick lately, fresh hot peppers, I slice them up and have them on EVERYTHING  lol.

Had  a S.F. popcicle while watching American Idol.

Vitamins and water are all on track.

Hope your feeling better.

Andy
