complications

Hello everyone. It's been a rough few weeks for me. I am going to try to make this as short as possible. I have my gastric bypass on 4-7-09. Approx. 3 weeks ago I started vomiting. I would vomit everytime I tried to eat of even drink. It got tot he point where I was getting dehydrated and not about to even keep a sip of water down. My doctors office (University Of MO Bariatrics) told me it sounded like I had a stricture and I needed to go to the ER. I went to the ER last week and they did a CatScan. It came back fine. They went ahead and admitted me telling me that the following day I would have an EDG to see if I had ulcers or a stricture or what. The next day the doctor sent me home without any tests and dismissed it as the flu. I was very upset about this b/c I knew something was wrong. He sent me home with medication for the nausea which stopped working after 2 days. Then the vomiting started again. On Monday I went back to the ER. They ended up doing the EDG and finding that not only did I have a stricture but I also have ulcers. They did a balloon procedure to stretch my stricture but I will have to have it done again in 4 weeks because they could not fully stretch it due to the ulcers. So 2 hospital stays with 8 days in the hospital and I finally have answers. I am back on liquids and will be for quite some time. I am so frustrated. Has anyone else gone through this?

Jody....I have not been thru this but I wanted you to know how badly I feel for you.  I am thankful you have answers but I know that this probably does not help at this point.  Please be careful and I'm sorry I can't help.

Im am so sorry that happened to you.  My question is, was De la Torre the one that sent you home before you had the EDG or one of the interns?  De la Torre is my dr on monday.
I pray you soon feel betterand on the road to recovery.
God bless.

It was Dr. Satgunam. He is a Bariatric Fellow...the doctor that does the post-op care.

I had been wondering what you found out.  I'm sorry to hear about your complications.  Hopefully this will be the end of that, get the ulcers cleared up and the stricture and this will be all taken care of.  I wish I had some advise to give you, but I don't you might try the RNY on the surgery board, there are people there that have had ulcers and I'm sure they can give you some good answers to your questions.  I wish that these things didn't happen and I know they don't know why they happen to some people and not to others.  I hope you get better really soon.  I'll be thinking about you. ;) Lou

Jody, I'm sorry to hear that you had all that trouble.  It's almost exactly what I had at 2 wks post op.  But I had extremely black bloody stools & started vomiting blood.  My stricture wasn't that bad & I believe it must have resolved itself because I don't have much trouble with it anymore.  As far as the ulcers,  all I can say is UUUUGGGGGG!!!  I really didn't have that bad of stomach pain like some do with ulcers, the vomiting blood was the worst thing.  I went to my local hospital (we are 3 1/2 hours away from Columbia) & they tried to tell me that it was my gallbladder, I got sent home & got worse and ended up making a VERY fast trip to Columbia the next day.  I ended up being admitted for several days, getting a blood transfusion because of it & was very weak.  I was also low on Potassium I believe, & it was so painful going into the iv.  I still occasionally have trouble with the ulcers.  I can tell when they start to act up, so I start back on the meds.  But really don't have much trouble, only occasionally.  I wish you well & hope everything works out for you.  I know at that point for me, I was wondering if I had made a huge mistake, but it will get better & now I know that I gave myself the best gift anyone could have ever given me, a new GREAT life.

Hugs & Good Luck!!!   Angy
