Back to my tailbone woes!!!

went to an orthopedic specialist today, he did x-rays.....my tailbone is curved sharply down and is poking me, he said it looks like a peice is ready to break off and wants to do surgery to remove it!!! I am very nervous at the prospect, he said he needs two surgeons, one to hold up and protect the bowel from perforation and him to remove the piece of tailbone.I don't understand how this could be related to weight loss, but I have never injured it or had pain before my surgery????he asked if my gastric bypass had any complications???why, they don't go near that area do they???  Anyone heard of this, or even had this type of surgery? I'd sure like to know what to expect...so  scared , i KEEP TRYING TO JUST PUT IT IN THE BACK OF MY Mind and forget it  (sorry about the caps)   I go for an MRI next week so he can get a clearer picture. A few prayers would be so appreciated. Thanks ALL, AT least I now know I just wasn't being the worlds biggest baby anyhow,   but I guess I wish i was ,rather than the alternative.

Do get a second opinion. Most all of us had pretty severe tailbone pain after surgery - it's the number one complaint of most WLS patients in the first year. See a doctor who is familiar with WLS or contact Dr. Hornbostel before you commit to any surgical procedure.

"WLS is about making better choices, a healthier lifestyle and seeing how little you can eat.  Portion control is the key to all weight loss surgeries.  Bottom line - it isn't how much you can eat - it is how little you can eat."

Oh, I absolutely will get a second opinion. I just can't figure out how I could have a piece look like it's ready to break off!! I've never really injured it ...I think you'd probably notice that! but I am in an awful lot of pain...I know that tailbone pain is to be expected, but at some times it is so sharp it brings tears to my eyes, and I've had 6 children NATURALLY , no epidurals, one (who was breach, and almost 9 lb.s) with a midwife....long story there... you get the picture, I am not a baby about pain, I can and have had to handle alot, and this just feels like more than a "normal" part of wls. But you guy's are right about a second op. The ortho told me he had only done the surgery one other time...so while I really liked him, I can't just bob my head yes , I need someone with more experience I think. My MRI (" to get a clearer pic than x-ray's show)is on sunday, follow up with ortho , Tuesday. I will post more after tuesday ...maybe the MRI will show something differen't....please .

I have a daughter that has a deformed tailbone and is and has been in pain since she was about 11 yrs old.  I talked to a fellow WLS just a month or so ago she was in so much pain she wasn't able to sit at all.  She had the surgery and has done really well and was out of pain. I will see if I can't find her on line and let her give you the inside scoop.  She wishes she would of had it done yrs ago, she has been suffering for a while now.  I know she will talk to you about it because she did me several times.  I will get you guys together on this because she knows exactly how you feel.

Oh thank you!! I would sure appreciate it I woud love to talk to someone that has actually had the surgery, I am so nervous, but I can't stay living like I am either, if I knew it would get better in X amount of time I could try and tough it out, but I've been in pain for months and months, and it has gotten worse not better.

I understand completely, my daughter has hurt for a long time and now she has no insurance so she has to suffer with this from now on.  I also have a son that his tailbone isn't even connected it just hangs there. They wanted to do surgery on him when he was 14-15 yrs old he didn't want to be in body case for 6 months, now he could be fused but he won't go.  My family has inherited these bad tailbone back things from my mom we both have the arthritis.  She is going to be 84 tomorrow and she is pretty bent over and can't straighten up.  I would be looking for a doc that has more experience then the one your using.  Tammy is the name of the lady I was talking about and she said she found a guy that is doing dozens of these a week.  Of course she is in New York.  Are you pretty close to KC?  I  hope she gets a hold of you today.  Keep me posted.

unfortunately, I live waaaay s.e kansas about 2 hr.s south of kansas city, however, i am moving to overland park in a few weeks so i'll be able to hopefully find my second opinion as well as more experience. i'm sure sorry about the kids i can't imagine having to live like this indefinetly, tho thats how it was for me until i won my social security disability case, the medicare was a God send, i had no insurance ,diabetic, and falling apart. I thought I wouldn't be around to many more years without medical help, but couldn't afford to go. Thanks again, susan
