Gastric Bypass or Lap Band?!?!
Nikki,
I wanted the RNY because I was told it was all my insurance would pay for. I have an aunt who had the lap band and she did fairly well, but can eat the same foods and her weight goes up and down because of it. She is not as heavy as she was, but it still fluctuates. But she is very happy with it.
I personally wanted something that would punish me for not eating what I should eat, or for eating something I shouldnt eat. Dr. Hornbostel was my surgeon and he did an absolutely amazing job with explaining everything and answering my questions. If he says your Dr is top notch I think you are moving in the right direction.
But honestly, you need to figure out what you want and what will work best for you. In regards to what your grandmother said. My son was very distraught over me having the surgery. He said "mom you can never eat those foods you love again" and then one day when I wasnt feeling well, he said well no wonder look at all the holes you have in your stomach (I had the laproscopic RNY). I took out my wonderful book from Dr. Hornbostel and explained to him what they had done. He still wasnt convinced. Then I talked to him about the health risks of being overweight and how I wanted to be around a lot longer so I could see him grow up and be able to do things with them that I can not do now. Then he understood a lot more.
Surgery is serious regardless of what it is. But you need to weigh your options and what is best for you. I knew that I was missing out on so much right now and couldnt continue on like this. Dr. Hornbostel was able to give me something to help me acheive my goal. Something, no matter how hard I tried on my own to lose weight I couldnt get past 20 lbs. Dr. Hornbostel has given me my life back and I could not be happier about my decision.
I wish you the best in your journey. Keep your head up and do your homework, it helps to make your decision.
