CARE OF PLANTS IN THE COLD AND SNOW

What sort of weather did you all have Friday? We mostly had sunshine and temps of 62 ...not a bad day...the weather is stll saying rain and possible snow. But oh well we will see.

I have had so many emails today about snow and cold weather and plants that are up out of the ground.... Snow is an insulator...wont hurt much of anything , oh tomato plants or something like that but normal plants that come up by themselves...NO. wont hurt them...cold wont either unless it got down to zero and stayed that way for days.

A hard freeze that would kill fruit tree buds would be like below 30 ...plants that are in the ground and haven’t come up yet like potatoes or peas that have been planted ....no problems...so rest easy...just pray for snow not a hard freeze lol ....i have had tulips in bloom and had a freezing rain on them and the blooms were incased in ice.....ice melted and no damage to the tulips at all....

Later in the year when it the iris and lilies have buds on them and it comes a heavy frost it can do some damage.....i have found that no matter how big of a frost we have I can get out early in the morning before the sun hits things and using the water hose wash everything off and it doesn’t harm anything at all....really true....just have to take the chance that neighbors will see you ou****ering flowers in the dark lol
