Newbie - On the 6 month wait - Diet modification?

Hello all!

I'm new to the site, looking to get a little feedback.  I have a six month waiting period before my insurance will pay.  I really don't mind, it is actually helping me make some better choices and prepare for RNY.

I have chosen Seattle Sutton for prepared meals, and it is a 2000 calorie per day diet.  I have given up fast food, and so far, so good!!!  I have to see my doc 6 times, January - June, so I am already well on the way.

Anyone have any pre-surgery tips?

Thanks!

Welcome to the board.  Before my surgery I gave up the things that they told me that I would have to give up after the surgery. Like drinking out of a straw, no carbonated drinks, sugar, and carbs.  It did make it easier to change after the surgery.  I didn't have to wait the 6 months but I did have to maintain and not gain any weight the 7 months it took me took me to have the suregery.  I'm 4 months out and have lost almost 90 lbs.  Life is sweet now and its totally been worth it. =) Best of luck and if you have any questions let us know.  Lou

My doc has us go on a liquid diet for two week b4 surgery to shrink the liver, this makes it easier to work the surgery.  I was so afarid of that two weeks.  Afraid I wouldn't make it.  So a couple of weeks before that was two begin I started on slim-fast for breakfast and lunch with a regulad dinner.  That really gave me the confidence I needed.  I knew then that I could go all day without eating a meal.

I, too, had the 6 month wait, they tell you it ggoes fast, but I didn't think so!  I am 5 weeks post op with a weight loss of 30 lbs.

Hang in there and I'll see  you on the losers bench!

Hugs,

Deb

Thanks everyone!  I am soooo ready for the change of life, and very excited about it.

Luckily I don't drink soda, and very rarely eat sugary stuff, so that may help.  I'm a meat and potatoes guy, so that has been the hardest thing.  Seattle Sutt. is mostly fresh fruits and veggies, but luckily I like those too!

You all are a great bunch, thanks again!!!

John that diet you are on is great with the fruits and veggies but you require lots of protein and alway bwill , i still think the reason i healed so fast and had no problems was that i was loaded down with protein before surgery....on potatoes white ones are a no no they are starch whitch become sugar. you can have a baked sweet potato how ever...

John,
Amen to Jan. I too had a six months waiting period and I was required to go to the gym 3-4 times per week and to see the nutritionist monthly. I think starting the plan of exercise really helped me. I was a very sedentary person and now I can walk much easier and faster. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so some weight-bearing exercise is not good for me but walking is the best, cheapest and easiest. I started cutting out stuff like you have and it really does help. However, after your surgery you'll find you really aren't hungry except in your head. Remember to force yourself to drink water, Crystal Lite or whatever. That is still a challenge for me but I do it. You might also want to get some Protein samples from sites on Obesity Help and see what you like. Another clue - don't stock up on anything you like pre-op. Your taste really does change after surgery. It took me about six months to want anything chocolate or sugary. Wi**** had lasted longer!!
Best wishes and keep posting. It keeps you on your toes.
