New...again

I am  new...again, haven't chosen a surgery type yet but am on my 6 month supervised diet before I can get final approval.  So I am working on a moderate exercise routine and actually doing weigh****chers for the diet part of the supervised diet.  I have been doing that for about 3 weeks, I gave up sugary soda, and fast food completely and have started making better choices.  Unfortunately losing weight was never the problem, it was always sticking to it and keeping it off without gaining 20 extra everytime.... I have picked out a surgeon and attended some of the info seminars so I have lots of information, but am nervous about picking one. I am an eater, that is what I do, I am afraid of causing my own failure with the band, but I am afraid of the extreme restrictions with the rny also.  So having said that, I welcome any and all words of advice, tidbits of information and personal stories of triumph or failure that might help me along the road to success.

Kristi...first let me say Welcome to the board....
To understand you right...your a eater right??? Well so was I....and boy was I....Now I am what the call a light weight....I only weighed 222 and am only 5'1", when I started this journey....but I too was a eatter....I just had to find a way for it to stop....and doing surgery was my answer! My health was fading fast as well...everytime I would go to Dr. something else was going wrong and would result in MORE MEDS!! So finally Dr. sugessted surgery....thus here I am...only 2 and halve months out...and loving it!!!
Food was my best friend....nothing and noone could ever replace it!!! I was the first thing I thought about before my feet would even hit the floor and the last thing that I thought about as I went to sleep that night!!! That not including all through the day too!! I would sneak food, hide and lie about it....So you see it controled me!! UNTIL I had surgery!!
I use to think that I was in control....well soon found out that was not the case....after many, many failures on diets, going up and down, depression set in.....ya that didnt help at all...just made it worse....so more meds....I called myself the M'M queen....should have really took stock in the company...would have been rich by now...lol One bag after another....one trip to McDonalds and only ordering one sandwich led to the next one only to order two that time and on and on and on.....so see it controled me......and to top it all off.....I was not one bit hungry....it won everytime!!!
I knew that the lap band was not the thing for me....I knew that it couldnt control me the way that I needed it too.....But yet didnt know alot about the RNY either.....This board and these wonderful people taught me what I know about the RNY and of course the Dr.s office and seminar. I needed something that would give me the control that I did not have....
Now that surgery is done.....I no longer crave that fast food, nor do I even want it!! I have no desire for sweets or all the junk that controled me before....which it really great!!
Dont get me wrong....you have to do what is right for you so make sure your research is done...ask lots and lots of questions....no question is stupid either ok....we have all been in the shoes that your in right now....the only difference is now we control what goes in our mouths!!
Hugs to you and stay around and we will help you in anyway we can...

Hi Kristi,  welcome to the board!   I am just five weeks post-op and am down 30 lbs.  Could never have done that without my RNY.  I, too, didn't know which surgery to go for until I went to my surgeon's seminar.  He said the statistics he saw in his own practice were that only 30% of band patients lost their desired weight and kept it off.  He also said that if you could follow the  restrive diet required after a band surgery you probably wouldn't be overweight.  Just food for thought.  It's entirely you choice.  Everyone on this board will support you 100% no matter which surgery you choose.

Best of luck, Kristi.  Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hugs,

Kristi,
Most posters on this board have had RNY and we generally love it. I knew I couldn't do the lap band because I would cheat!!! I went to my first seminar knowing that I'd have RNY and I never wavered. That said - if you want lap band info go to the lap band board and there will be many on there who are very successfully losing. They lose more slowly and I'm an impatient person and I was 62 years old so I knew I had to get the weight off quickly - diabetes, HPB, Rheumatoid Arthritis - to name a few problems I had medically.
Do your research, keep asking questions and you'll do the right thing for you.
Hugs,
Lana
