Want to talk to recent Roux-en-Y patients....
Hello.... Im just a little over 4 weeks out...I feel great!!! I went on the 9th dec and went home on the 10th. but normal stay is 2 days, depending on your Dr. and how things went for ya. I passed my leak test that morning and Dr.H sent me home....said that I would rest better there.
Now as far as post op....Its not been that bad....guess it depends on the person....some are sick and dont handle things really well and some dont have a problem one. I for one havent had too many problems...its only now that Im finding things that dont set well with my new pouch. But to start off with your on liquids for the first week and then puree the next 2....but every Dr. is different and had different rules.
Stick around here and post away with any questions....everyone here is great.....so Welcome to the board and good luck on surgery....and dont let the anxiety get to ya....your doing this for you and your health right??? so you will do just fine....any other questions...just ask

Thanks so much for your response. I'm just really looking at the site starting today. Was on it sometime ago when I first started the process. I will try and check this more often....hopefully I'll remember how I got here. I'm sure I'll have more ?'s as the time approaches. Thanks for the feedback and hopefully we can share information back and forth... You'll be an 'ol pro at this and I will be the rookie!
Have a great weekend!

Hii Karen i do remember when you came on before... my surgery has been more than two years ago so im an old pro at the new way of life....that is the main thing i want you to know is that it is a change of life in thoughts of eating and living....not a diet but a change of life....it isnt easy but it isnt hard either once you get the new eating patterns in your head... i had no problems at all with my surgery and no problems afterwards either. I did stay in the hospital 2 days probably because im older but i have done great. and lost 125 pounds gone from size 22 down to size 10s. so no complaints from me, i wouldnt complain if i could get into an 8 but oh well will take what i can get lol
any way welcome back hope you come back often Jan

Hi Karen,
Well like Cor said all Doc's are different so we all have different rules. I on the other hand was in the hospital for a month but I was a high risk patient and had some major co morbities. I also had to have a trach. Now I don't want to scare you with this I knew that I was going to have to have the trach and be in the hospital for a month going into this. I would have agreed to just about anything to have the surgery. You can read my story on my profile. I had surgery Janurary 22, 2008 and weighed 557 lbs. Today I weigh 355 lbs and have lost a total of 202 lbs. All in all with all the things I went through and had to endure I'd do this all over again a hundered times if I had to. I have gotten a new shot at LIVING and not jus****ching life pass me by.
As far as post-op went...it really isn't a painful surgery. You'll be surprised at how good you feel after surgery.
One bit of advice---YOUR TASTE BUDS WILL CHANGE!!!! The things you like now you might not like after surgery. So don't go buying all kinds of protien powders and such that you like now because you might not like them after surgery and might waste your money. The best way to try protien is to order samples. That way you can taste them all and find one you like. I personally do protien bullets to get my protien in. Along with food.
Also DO NOT wait too long to try on clothes. Alot of us don't think we have lost much and can't fit into a smaller size and we didn't try. Well as a result of that I didn't get to wear some clothes that I had saved that were too small that I wanted to get into. By the time I tried them on they were TOO BIG!!! I was like OMG I can't believe this.
Buckle your seat belt honey, it's one hell of a ride honey!!!

Cor and Angie....
Thanks so much for responding and sharing. At our support sessions that are open to pre and post op the overwhelming response was that the 2 weeks prior to surgery on the liquid protein was the hardest. So far I'm in day 2 and it hasn't been bad at all. I think my "will" is so strong to have it done and behind me so I can start my new beginning.
Angie...thanks for the input on the taste buds and clothes. Also, I'm curious about your protein bullets. They were talking about some capsules that are available through a company by the name of Prism (I think that was it). The daily vitamins were in clear packages on a strip so you had your entire day's intake to grab and take with you.
I'm going to try and access this site over the weekend with a laptop at home that I'm borrowing until I come back to work. Hopefully I can stay tuned into the chatroom.
Thanks gals for all your help.....it means alot!

I had my surgery on January 13th 2009 and came home on the 15th. I passed my leak test but my blood pressure was high so he kept me.
Surgery its self isn't to bad. I am having some problems now However like everyone said everyone is different. I haven't had to use any pain medicine since I have been home.
If you would like to talk further let me know.

Hi Karen! I am excited for you
I had my surgery 12-29-08. I went home the night of the 30th . I was a little dehydrated at the hospital but they got me all set by the evening. I have been recovering at home and I actually have used the pain meds.( I know a lot don't) but it wasn't crazy pain but enough to decide to use them. So far I really haven't had any problems post op. I have a lot of energy but get tired easy it seems. If I would give you advice it would be to be sure and sip sip sip on your water. If you have any questions be sure to ask! Good luck on your journey.
Peace and love
Beth
