My boyfriend of many years has been told he needs WLS. He has had a sllep study and with CPAP or Bypass neither work for him. His SPo2 levels wont go above 86 at best while sleeping. He is I am guessing at least 500 plus and has many more issues.....high blood pressure, knee problems-unresolved (no one will touch a knee with all that weight). We have 7 kids together and getting the weight off will make the future look much brighter.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Dr Hornbostels hospital has a 460 weight limit.

I was around  550 lbs when I first started my journey.  I could not find anyone in Missouri to do  WLS at that weight.  The one doctor I did find that was really encouraging was Dr. Hornbostel,  he and his staff encourgaged me and helped me get off 100 lbs by the time I had surgery.   Its not an easy task to get that much weight off but it can be done.  At that weight just remember alot of the first part of the weight lost will be water weight.   Is what I did to get down to 450 lbs was go on liquid protein diet,  again it wasnt easy.

You also might try Missouri Bariatrics in Columbia,  they have a Nutritional program to help people over 500 lbs get down so they can have surgery.   They will sometimes prescribe diet meds to curb the appettite after screening your health,  they are also very good at what they do.

Hope some of that helps.  If you have an questions at all, feel free to email me at any time   [email protected].

I'm not sure what limits, if there are any my surgeon has. But he is highly regarded in the medical field and the WLS community. He is located near Shawnee Mission Medical Center, which is an easy drive via 435. He is the co-founder of The Bariatric Center of Kansas City and his name is Dr. Stanley Hoehn. It is a Center of Excellence and he has a wonderful aftercare program. If you like give his office a call and ask whatever questions you have 913-677-2508. He also offers free information seminars which you can register for online at http://www.kcbariatric.com/

I had Lap Band surgery 15 months ago (he also does RNY's too of course) and am very pleased with his care and the service I have received from his staff.
Good luck with your search,

HI,

I weighed 557lbs the day of surgery.  I looked in 6 states until I found a surgeon that would take my insurance which is medicare/medicaid and would preform surgery on me.  Her name is Dr Margret Inman in Carmel IN and she is wonderful.  You can go to the Indiana board here on OH and ask about her--there are many there that have had her as their surgeon.  I wish you all the best of everything and if I can be of any help please just ask.

I now weigh 355lbs and have lost a total of 202lbs since Janurary of this year.  I am very happy with my decision to have surgery and would do it over a hundred times if I had to.

I just wanted to add that I went to Dr Hornbostel and would have gladly accepted his as my surgeon but I was over the weight limit and had to loose almost 100lbs and at that time in my life that felt like it was pretty IMPOSSIBLE to do and I don't know if I would have lived to see the 100lbs gone.

I also tried Shawnee Mission and was turned down because I was over the weight limit and my underlying co-morbities.

I tried Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, Tennesee, Illnois, and Texas (you know the guys on big medicine--they wanted me to MOVE to tx for 6 months---yeah couldn't do that--and something about they don't take out of state medicare---don't ask me why since it's a federal insurance)

Dr Inman was a former trama surgeon and I was totaly at ease and comfortable with her.  Not once did she make me feel like she couldn't handle my body during surgery.  I highly recommend her.
