I was wondering as wls patients and being 9 months out can we have any type of alcohol?  I am going to a big Halloween party tomorrow night and this is my first time going out since surgery.  I am not a big alcholo drinker to begin with but I was just wondering????  What will it do to us?

Being preop I can't tell you from experience but I am told its not a good idea to drink alcohol. I have heard it makes you dump. I do know someone postop several years who does drink and becomes intoxicated very quickly. If you think you might I would do it at home first to see how you react. You would be at a high risk for alcoholism , or at least I have read this.Just be very careful if you do decide to drink..

what Susie says is what i have heard too,...several do say that we are a high risk when it comes to drinking.
one drink will make you very drunk very fast a,nd then it goes away very fast alowhich causes a person to drink more and then more and more ,each time getting really drunk fast and just as quickly sober,,,which has caused for a lot of alchol to be in the system very fast and even tho it isnt making you drunk anymore it is still there and can get an overload very fast which can cause death....so might be just as well if we just leave it alone... or like Susie said maybe try it at home first just dont keep drinking...,,

I have also read somethings about WLS and a toxicity to alcohol..some have a severe reaction and it cause some type of seizures...If your not much of a drinker anyway, I would skip it and ask for a water with lemon! lol! But have fun at the party!!! Im all about parties, I just do them without the alcohol!

Looked this up on a website.

Drinking alcohol after gastric bypass greatly increases your risk of intoxication (getting drunk). Alcohol is absorbed quickly into your small intestine, even when taken in small amounts.

  • Alcohol has no nutritional benefits and only adds empty calories.
  • Alcohol can cause liver damage, lead to addiction, slow your weight loss or add to weight gain.
  • Alcohol can block the absorption of many vitamins and minerals. Since gastric bypass surgery also limits absorption of nutrients, this blocking can add to the risk of vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
