I am so excited I found out last week that insurance through my work has taken the exclusion out and as of the begining of 09. YEAHHHHHHH. I have wanted some sort of help with my weight for years. I know that as of the 1st they will start covering and I am so excited. My doctor has already said that she would write the referral. I guess I am so excited I have heard that alot has to be done before the surgery. As far as I know my insurance will only cover lap band. Where do I start!!!!!!

first off does your insurance say who you have to go to for this? you know your surgeon?  Dr. Hornbostel did mine and several others on here dont think you could go wrong using him but surgeon is your choice unless your insurance has some provisions...
Next you go to a seminar...Dr. Hs are the first Sunday in the month at Sedalia, dont know when or where the others are.  You might want to go to a couple and see which doctor you like best.
Some of the bigger practaces you wont necessarily ever see your surgeon except at the appointment you have in his office to meet him after that they have fellows that follow the patients.

after the seminar and you have chosen the one you want.  you send in paper work with diet history and all that you get from their office. along with the referral from you pcp.   they will then tell you what they want from you.....hope all of this helps....some of the doctors have you doing all sorts of things that you have to pay for and some dont.   so when you go to seminars ask them about that stuff. too. along with all the other questions you might have.
get excited it is real and will happen.....congradulations.

I have to go through  Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery. They are the only ones that are covered.

I looked it up online and it is the overall medical group. There is one located in shawnee mission, kansas city, and .......i dont remember the last one. From what I understand it is the bariatric center that blue cross goes through...I am not exactly sure how it goes but that is all the infoI was given, that I have to go through Blue Distinction centers for Bariatric Surgery.... Congratulations! You will need to start by attending an information seminar provided by a WLS surgeon. I highly recommend my surgeon. I was banded just over a year ago and have been so pleased with my care. He is in Shawnee Mission but just off 435&75th Street. Click on his name under my screen name and it will take you to his OH website and you can go from there. His name is Stanley Hoehn. If I can answer any questions please feel free to ask.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Research your options, if you have a lot of weight to lose you might want to consider the RNY.  I have heard a lot of people that aren't happy with the lapband cause the weight loss is slower among other reasons.  Just make sure you educate yourself on all the surgeries available out there and find the one you feel is best for you and your situation.  There are a lot of good dr's in the KC and surrounding area go to more than one seminar if you can.  Ask them if you have to do a 6 month dr. supervised diet and if so make sure your pcp sees you at least once a month and documents your weight and that you talked about your weight issues.  Insurance companies are very picky and will try any way they can to not have to pay so cover yourself and document everything even the calls you may make to your insurance who you talked to, date, everything you never know when you will need that information.  You don't want to prolong your surgery so stay on top of everything and asume nothing unless it is in writing.....Good luck on your new jorney it is an amazing one....

I have been with this company for 4 years and last March I left because I heard that another company needed help and they had insurance companies that covered weight loss options. So I left my comfortable job and went to work for another company just for insurance. After much research into their insurance companies I found out I was lied to and I luckily was wanted back at my previous employer. I had just about given up when I got a insurance update last Tuesday saying that they were going to start covering lap band in jan 09 ....I dont wanna push my luck I wanna be healthy again. I was diagnosed with diabetes about a month and a half ago and the sucky part is i was 3 points away from being non diabetic......I wanna be drug free......glucophage free..If they cover more I truly would like the RNY but  if they will only cover lap band ...lap band herre i come...lol
To all have posted THANK YOU and I appreciate all the help.

Sincerely
Donna
