Hi, my husband & I just had Lap Band surgery in Mexico.  We returned home yesterday.  We think it went well but still have a lot of pain/discomfort.  ~~We need to find a clinic in Missour ( STL, Springfield, Columbia , central Missouri regions) That will do the fills and follow -up care of another physician.  Our insurance would not pay so it was not a choice except not to have the surgery. ~~72 hours after surgey I had an Ensure & hope I haven't injuried anything.  I would love to hear your advice, do's and don't and WHAT NOW and WHERE to go.  We don't know if we were supposed to drive/fly. We did.  So much we didn't educate ourselves to before we left. Please don't think Mexico was wrong.  So far I think we had excellent care: The clinic was spotless, there was a language barrier and many of our questions are unanswered only because whiIe we asked and the staff answered we didn't understand everything and did not ask the approiate questions. Thanks so much in advance.

I really dont have any advice other than maybe trying the Lap Band board---they might be able to help out more with the dos and don'ts.  Good Luck!

Congrats on your surgery and best wishes on your journey to reaching your goals.  The best advice I can give you is ask your questions and be prepared for a variety of answers.  Then discern for yourself what works for you, maintains your health, and helps you towards achieving your goals.  My reason for stating this is that you are going to find a variety of advice depending on the surgeon folks had and that of the program they went through for their surgery.

Some of the basics for the program I went through are:

1.  Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water a day.  Sip, sip, sip.  This ensures you get in plenty of fluids each day and helps with the eating between meals.

2.  Stop drinking a minimum of 30 minutes before you eat, do not drink while you eat, and wait an hour after you eat before you start drinking again.  This goes hand in hand with #1.

3.  When you eat, eat your protein first.  Then if you have room eat your vegetables and fruits.  No bread or pastas.

4.  Liquid diet was three days after surgery, then soft foods (yogart, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, string cheese) for the next week after.  Then move on to other foods as you can tolerate them.  Red meat was later down the road, 6 months.

5.  Ensure you consume 60 to 70 grams of protein a day.

I sure there are others that I just do not remember off the top of my head right now.  So again, ask you questions and we will help you all we can.

As for my story briefly.  I had lap band July 2, 2007 and after one year I lost 113 lbs.  My goal was 101 pounds and as of this morning I have lost a total of 117 pounds.

Blessings,
Bill
