How long before any of you ate meat?

Hello gals and guys,
I was just wondering how long it was until ground up chicken and pork or fish for that matter sat ok in the tummy?  I am 4 weks post op and am down 44 pounds.  I read in my binder that I can start to try grond meat, so I did and boy was that a mistake!!!!   It was the first time I threw up.  It did not hurt to throw up but the eating of the ground meat was like it was stuck in my chest. OUCH!!  I have since gave into the notion of being a vegeterian and  never eating meat again.  Will this ever pass?  I feel great otherwise.  I have as appointment the 2nd with Doc. Hornbostel I just love that guy, and will discuss with him also.  I also have to get a b12 shot.  I have given b12 in my nursing career however I have never had one.  Do they hurt?  I know they go in the butt.  I am a big wimp when it comes to needles.  I can give a shot, IV or PICC line however I am wimpy when it comes to me getting a shot!  Go figure.  Love and hugs to you all and have a great labor day weekend!!!

Kerri there is no set answer to that one. some people can and some people cant. I can now tolerate small amounts of ground beef as in Chili or tacos but cant very much. i still cant do steaks or chops, can do chicken if it is really moist and covered in some sort of sauce.
If you are going to be a vegertarian you will have to get your protein from protein shakes or drinks and that means at least 3 of them a day maybe even 4 unless you want to eat beans 3 times a day for the rest of your life lol

I am now two years out and still do have trouble but my sister who is 6 mos behind me eats steak and anything else. it i think depends on the person and their pouch ....it isnt that important to me so i drink my shakes every day and go on. lol i have found out that food doesnt interest me most of the time and i very seldom get hungry. i really do eat to live not live to eat anymore. crazy thought isnt it?

Jan is right that it depends on the pouch. My surgeon allows moist chicken, seafood, etc. at two weeks post op and I am handling them just fine. I had my chicken with ff mayo and a hardboiled egg all mixed up in my mb. I've also had a low fat crabcake that went down just fine.

Good luck to you.
I also did the vegetarian thing for a year when I was in high school. I was very healthy and lost weight. Wish I hadn't let that boyfriend talk me out of it.

Hi Kerri

I am 7 weeks post op and I can not eat meat yet...I have tried tuna and shrimp and both were a no. I am allowed to eat hamburger now but am afraid to try it yet. I can eat deli meats with no problem. I hope I will be able to eat meats someday...as I truely hate, hate, hate the protein drinks but I choke them down as I have to....

Thank you to all who have responded, I can tolerate the protien shakes however I do not want to eat beans and pb for the rest of my life.  I will give it another 4 weeks and see then.  It hurt too bad when I tried it.  I have seriously considered a vegeterian diet though, carbs and cooked vegies go down the easiest.  Again thanks to you all for the reply.

I looked back at my book and my dr recommends waiting 6 months out for red meats...chickens (very moist) and cut up very fine for week 5-6 and seafood at that point too!

I remember taking the tiny little bites and chewing until I thought my jaw would drop off! lol

You may have taken too big of a bite and not chewed it well enough or just wait a couple more weeks and try something again...remember small and slow

I love meat and have no problems eating whatever I want like my sis said, I still cut everything into tiny pcs tho...and chew chew chew!     Good luck

I think I did meat at 2 or 3 months out but it was small and I chewed forever.  I didn't try steak for probably a year.  I can eat any meat now and I will be out 3 years in November.  Hopefully you can eat meat soon.  You may not have chewed up your meat well enough.  Good luck and God bless, Penni

Okay the b-12 shot....I give them to myself.  My dr writes me a scrip and I inject them myself.  I have injected insuling for 17 years so was no big deal.  You can get the shot anywhere you want.  But, arm, belly, ect.  Get it where you have the most fat, you wont feel it.  I do mine in my belly.  The actual fluids you wont feel a single thing.  It looks like you are injecting red kool-aid lol.  I just did mine again about an hour ago.

As for the meat.  Well obveously every surgeon has their own rules which vary a great deal.  I can eat cream of chicken with the bits if chicken.  I tried cream of shrimp and the shrimp made me get gas and the ****s.   I have had some chicken stirfry here at home and had to eat all but not the chicken chunks.  I am sure I got some but had no issues.  I hear alot try tuna, or even the chicken in the pouches for like chicken salad sandwiches.  Some have liked corn beef hash. (dog food) lol
