I am in the process of getting insurance approval for rny and I have a question. I have heard stories about the dumping and gas problems and am scared. I have intestinal issues already and have very weak  control now. I have had these issues since giving birth 25 years ago so they aren't going away. I wonder just how much that will impact my life. I can't control passing gas now. Will I be chained to the bathroom forever? I was hoping less food and weight loss would help this problem but it seems from what I read that will be worse. Anyone care to comment?

yes i pass gas so does everyone and yes sometimes it is pretty bad but it is always related to something i eat.  like i love shrimp and oh no i know to only eat it when im going to be home or in my garden outside. dumping is only when you eat something that you arent suppose to have in the first place like something with too many carbs or too greasy or too much sugar and no it will never get better , before anyone does wls they should know this is a change of life eating pattern that is never going to get to where you can eat anything you want to . You will always be concerned if you are getting enough protein and enough calories and taking your vits . so it isnt an easy way out for sure.  I too use to have very weak control of my bowels but that really has improved ...are you in the presence of people daily ? you learn also to use gas x stips. i carry them with me everywhere and they stop embarassing gas almost instantly. hope i helped you out some.....

I use gas x now but it is not much help. I have ordered some products from the store(obesity help) to give them a try.I ordered a sample pack and the deodorizer pills. I figure I should give the diet a try before I make a commitment. I tried the medifast several years ago and was able to lose some but could only do it for five months. That has been my limit time wise before I start to cheat. I see my PCM in two weeks to see if after all my testing they will give me a letter of medical need. The closer I get to getting this done the more scared I am.The bowel peoblems are my biggest fear. I barely make it to the bathroom as it is. I guess my diet is to blame so I figure it will be worth trying the diet before I commit. Thanks for your answer.

there is a product that i think has to have a prescription for ....i will find out and post it on the board for you several people i know that work in offices and such swear by them

the diet there is no way that you can eat as small of amount as you do after surgery. and if you have the RNY done you wont cheat , if you do then comes the dumping and worse bowel problems etc etc.
I love the fact that i am now have no high blood pressure , no high colestrol and was borderline dietbetic. i still have arthritis becasuse i did too much damage with the weight before i did something about it. may i ask you if you have any illinesses ? I weighted 272 and now weigh 157 i did wear size 22s now wear size 10s. i had one knee done and am getting ready to have the other one done.  I was walking without a walker or cane in 2 weeks after knee surgery if i had still be fat i would probably never have gotten back to really being able to walk well.
I run and play with my 3 year old GREAT  grandson....yes Great grandson. My husband and i went dancing a few weeks ago and we danced for almost 3 hours straight only going back to the table to drink water lol ...
if i can answer anymore questions for you let me know. and welcome to the Missouri board. hope you stay around for a while.

As Jan has said, this is a life changing surgery and you need to investigate it totally and know that you will not be the same again. I don't have the gas problems as bad as some folks and I don't dump - though I try not to eat lots of sugary stuff. Talk to your doctor about your bowel incontinence problems. I don't want to discourage you but most of us have been serial dieters for years and that hasn't worked for any of us!!! I don't feel chained to the bathroom but I do know where most of them are located in the stores I frequent. You'll be fine I think. I have always had bowel problems too and I'm sure no worse and I think somewhat better.

"WLS is about making better choices, a healthier lifestyle and seeing how little you can eat.  Portion control is the key to all weight loss surgeries.  Bottom line - it isn't how much you can eat - it is how little you can eat."

something else i do need to tell you is that if you have always cheated on diets please do not let anyone talk you into having the Lapband surgery , it is way to easy to cheat on it.....as my doctor use to say you can drive right thu dairy queen and get a cho malt and drink it with no problems at all. that is the main reason i didnt go with the lapband, i to have always cheated on my diets , when i hit a plautea then i just would start eating again instead of waiting it out and upping myexercise. .....
