Belching way too much
I'm 2 weeks out, Since the day after surgery I have belched a lot. It happens after drinking anytthing or eating. I've just started on soft foods this week. I eat very slowly and chew, chew, chew.
Also, I'm really having a problem getting my protein in. I bought a couple bottles of Isopure. Don't really care for the taste and they are way too expensive. I mixed unflavored protein in Crystal Lite and tossed that, really nasty. After 4 weeks on protein shakes, I'm sick of those.
No matter how careful I am when I eat, I get a pain in the middle of my chest. Is that normal and does it go away?
Any suggestions?

well Jo im sorry to hear that you are havint problems but you HAVE to get your protein in no questions it has to be done some way or some how. I dont have any
easy answers about any of it , it is just a matter of making your self do it. You have to do it , it isnt something that you have a choice about. maybe 3 or 4 years down the road if you can eat gobs of food then you wont have to do the protein but not now. the amount of food you should only be eating is just tablespoons full at this point and no matter what you ate it wouldn NOT be enough protein.
that pain in the middle of your chest is just the tiny little pouch telling you that im not completly healed so be careful what you put in here.
what kind of protein powder are you using , there is a lot of difference. really a lot.

Hey, you said Isopure was way to expensive but if you go online to GNC and buy it by the case and buy $75 worth they pay the shipping and if you figure the cost per ounce of protien, it isnt anymore expensive than buying the powder and mixing it, even with Crystal lite..I too can not tolerate the shakes in any form but try several flavors of the isopure...there are several. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PROTIEN!!!
Gas is normal too! Gas-x strips are life savers that first month or 2

GOD is my ROCK! SUGAR
I'm going to echo Jan and Sugar. Doing your protein is not a choice - you have to do it. I always relate it to taking medicine - I may not like the taste but I do it to be healthy. You can't whine or weazel your way around it - you MUST get it down. I use unflavored protein powder and Crystal light, crushed ice and water in my blender/magic bullet. I like grape best. I'm going to try Isopure - can get singles at GNC at the mall. I don't like shakes made with milk and flavored powders. But - I'm 19 months out and still experimenting and tweaking the protein so that tells you how important I think it is. This AM I made one with water, ice, powdered peanut butter and SF choc syrup and Splenda. Not great but it's done.
I also use the AnyWhey or ProSlam bullets - lots of grams in a small volume. Another thing - when I mix up my shake I use the minimum amount of ice and water to get it blended in and usually two scoops of powder. I don't like big gobs of stuff to drink.
As for the burping - you may be swallowing air when you eat - are you using a straw by any chance?
Please be sure you get that protein in some way. And your water too. I personally know two people who have been hospitalized because they didn't drink enough water or do their protein drinks - it's nothing to fool around with.
There are valid reasons why you are told to do these vitamins, the protein and the water. You may as well bite the bullet and learn to get them down because you will be doing some form of this regimen the rest of your life!!! You are not going to "get better" and be able to eat like you used to. It will always be challenging to balance all the foods you need. The pain in the middle of your chest is probably air in your tender new pouch or it is just reminding you that you've irritated it by putting in food. At two weeks out you still should be eating only pureed or blended foods so check your instructions and be sure you're not rushing things. We want you to succeed like crazy and you will if you just remember to follow the rules. They were created with your success in mind.

Lana, you have slapped me around so much I'm not sure I'm up to taking care of myself. I have gone over and over the information provided by my surgeon and I'm trying to do everything just right. I do know the importance of protein and water. This is a whole learning experience for me. I'm doing well with my water but I am having a problem getting my protein is. If something tastes really bad, I can't get it down.
I went to GNC and got a soy based powder and it tastes pretty good. Had a shake first thing this morning. Also got some protein pudding that is 20 grams protein a can. It's also pretty good but I need to divide it into 2 or 3 portions since it's a pretty good sized can.
I tried unflavored protein in Crystal Lite and dumped it. Just couldn't get it down. According to my instructions from the surgeon, starting 2 weeks after surgery, I can have chicken, eggs, string cheese, refried beans, fish, potatoes, rice, mac & cheese and various fruits and veggies. I had chicken and cooked carrots that I chewed and chewed and chewed. I must have eaten too fast and that did come up.
Last night I had a very small piece of fish and a spoonful of mac & cheese. I ate very slowly and had no problem or pain with that meal. I know I can't get enough protein in the foods I'm eating so I must have the added protein. I just need to find something that is palatable. I don't expect the shakes to taste like a Dairy Queen special.
Please take it easy on me. I'm the new kid on the block. It's just been 2 weeks since surgery and I really am trying to follow the rules.
I know that sometimes emails come across with a totally different tone that if we were talking in person.

Hi, there, i'm not going to go on about the importance of protein sounds like you already had the lecture on that one! lol, but yes they are right. I have had much the same problem, I bought this fruit nectar whey protein isolate ,4 large cannisters, they wer so good prior to surgery, then when I came home YUCK!!! just the smell of them made me sick. I went to Gnc and got a 5lb. cannister of "maximum protein" I got choc. vanilla, and strawberry, it cost 120.00 for the 3 it was buy 2 get one free (ouch) I didn't care for the vanilla it was too sweet, the strawberry was o.k, but the chocolate all I can say is YUM! it tasted EXACTLY like a yohoo(, I mixed it with water) also at gnc if you don't like it save your receipt and you can bring it back for something else, don't be intimidated by the good looking buff guy's that work there, they are very knowledgable about protein and such
. and cute as a bonus lol. Anyway back to the protein powder, by the time I finished off all the gnc stuff almost 3 mo's later, I tried the fruit nectar again, and I am able to tolerate it now. As for the chest pain it sounds like you still have alot of air, when you try the gasx strips use like 3 or so at a time one or two did not cut it for me!, also don't overeat, 2 tablespoons is enough for now, your mouth may want more, but the tummy doesn't want or need it, the pain will go away , give it another a week or so, make sure you do the gas x , they really do help. good luck, susan
