I just had a mini health screening done today.  My good cholesterol was very low - 17.  Does this have anything to do with my RNY?

Thanks
Renee

Hi, Renee:

When I first had my cholesterol checked years ago my HDL was in the single digit area.  My HDL was low 6 months ago too.  My PCP told me the following would help raise my HDL:

Niacin - Prescription only  (I haven't done that yet)

Alcohol - Red Wine (4 - 6 ounces) nightly or 1 ounce of hard liquor.

Nuts - Almonds & Walnuts

Olive Oil

Fish - Tuna, Salmon, Halibut, Swordfish

At last check, my HDL was up to 39!  They would like it to be 40 or above.  So I'm close to normal there!  I don't drink red wine much nor do I drink the hard liquor.  I have increased my Almonds and Nuts as well as fish.  I had my lap rny 3/7/07.  You need to check with your surgeon BEFORE you try and eat nuts.  Not sure when you can have them.

Hope this information helps.  I had my PCP write this information on a Prescription pad and I placed it on my fridge so I wouldn't forget it!

Take Care,

Debbie D.
